Hi All,
I know this will come as good news to some and not good news for others. Please read the MTA's comment below and take note that the return date IS NOT etched in stone. Those of you who live along Calamus or 79th Street will see the signs going up and most likely see a notification posted that the Q47 is officially back. I will reach out to Mr. DePalma to make sure the temporary stops on 69th Street as well as Grand Avenue have notifications on them as well. We don't want folks waiting for a bus that doesn't come! Roe Daraio, President COMET Civic Association www.cometcivic.com Hi Roe, We received word from the contractor that we can resume Q47 service back to the normal route. We have put in the instructions to DOT to reinstall signage and plan to resume the route as early as next week (we’re aiming for June 4). This date is subject to change, pending the full restoration of the stops and roadway. Luke DePalma Assistant Director Government and Community Relations MTA New York City Transit 2 Broadway, D17.156 Hi All,
The contractor for this sewer project is presently working on 53rd Drive between 69th And 70th Street. As I was heading home, I noticed a worker taping fliers to the doors of homes on 70th Street between 53rd Drive and 54th Avenue. I was able to get a copy of the flier which is attached FYI. As you will note, streets adjacent to the streets being worked on can be affected. Nan (James) Zhang, COMET member and attorney, reached out to the Department of Design & Construction (DDC) to see if rodent abatement is being done prior to the street being dug up. The community liaison told him that when they are working on the water main, there will be NO rodent abatement in place because they don't think it will affect the rodents while they are doing work on the water main. However, when they are working on any sewer projects, rodent abatement will be in place automatically. We obviously don't agree with this statement because we feel that if there are loud vibrations anywhere near a rodent location, the rodents will scatter. That being said, we suggest that homeowners take precautionary measures and put down traps, etc. Don't leave your doors open and make sure your basement windows and doors are secure. James also followed up to insure that future notices are also in Chinese. "Our neighbors on 70th Street just received the attached 24 HOUR SHUT OFF NOTICE for construction. I appreciate that DDC is going around handing out shut off notice flyers to all families that are going to affected by this work BUT the flyer is once again in only English and Spanish. The total roads included in this job per your community advisory will affect approximately 300 families and 1/3 of them on record are Chinese families. I reached out to IVA and she told me to contact you regarding putting these 24 hour notices in Chinese considering 100 households will be affected by this. Please speak to the contractor or your office to provide the adequate notice for the Chinese families so people can be fully informed and plan accordingly with these jobs to avoid major inconveniences and possible health consequences due to lack of water." We'll continue to follow this project closely and keep everyone updated. Roe Daraio, President COMET Civic Association www.cometcivic.com Hi All,
If you love old cars, don't forget the car show this Sunday, June 3rd. See the attached flier for more info. This event is free to the public! Roe Daraio, President COMET Civic Association www.cometcivic.com Hi All,
If you look at the attached Community Board 2 meeting agenda, you will note that the land use proposal for 69-02 Queens Boulevard is up again for a Public Hearing. Those of you who couldn't make the other hearings might want to take this opportunity to testify. Roe Daraio, President COMET Civic Association www.cometcivic.com FYI from Captain Mackie, former Executive Officer at the 104th Precinct:
Greetings, Having been the previous Executive Officer of the 104 and 109 Precincts, I just wanted to get the word out about what appears to be a new Roofing Scam...they unsuccessfully attempted it on me yesterday morning at my home in Long Island. Queens is not too far away, and I don't want to see anyone victimized. Please feel free to share this with your family, friends and neighbors alike. At 10:30 AM a man knocks on my door from a carting company with a full sized Dumpster outside, and asks if I can move my vehicle so he can park the Dumpster in the street. I asked him what/who the dumpster was for (because I never requested one). He said it was for a roofing job to be done at my address. I told him I requested no such work to be done and requested him to leave with his dumpster, which he did. At 12:30 PM a different man with a yellow vest knocks on my door, and with a full-sized tractor trailer flatbed outside (dark blue cab with Newcastle Construction with a rook logo in white lettering on the side) loaded up with pallets and shingles. Again, this man claims I am getting a new roof. I proceed to say (again) that I never ordered a roof. He then produces an invoice with my exact address on it, and again I tell him I never ordered a roof. Then he asks me if I rent or own, because if I rent the owner would have requested the roof and not me. Then he says to me "you should just let them do the work, get a free roof out of it, and then not pay for it." Again I refused, told him I was a police officer and asked him leave. He said he would "call his company back" to "clarify" and left. I looked for the company online, and the only ones I could find with the same name were in Alabama, California and the United Kingdom. With the change in weather upon us, it is high time for roofing scams. I know these are unfortunately quite common when I was in the precincts, and I went ahead and did some research to gather more detailed information about the different ways these scams are conducted. The most common type of roofing scam is where a person claiming to be a roofer shows up, and says they looked at your roof from the street and see a problem with it and that it needs to be fixed immediately, and if it is not fixed right away they scare the homeowner that dire consequences (water damage, i.e., mold, dryrot) will ensue. They will insist upon an immediate payment (typically 3 to 4000) to do the "emergency work," and if you bite, they may either rip off a portion of your roof (and then never return to complete the job, while still billing you for the entire cost of the job), or spray it with some kind of "sealant"/spray paint. The most common thing with these scammers is that they are persistent, they will make several attempts to convince the owner to take the bait before moving on, and unfortunately they prey upon the elderly. If you did not initiate a job with a roofing contractor, or that contractor never conducted a pre-inspection of your home or quoted you a price which you agreed upon prior to performing any work, it's a scam. If someone does show up to your home with a truck and equipment which you did not request, try to get the company name and Dept. of Consumer Affairs license number (in NYC it will appear on the side of the truck if licensed), and report the company to the Dept. of Consumer Affairs, whether they have a DCA license or not. Please be aware and be safe. -Captain Gregory Mackie Narcotics Borough Queens North Hi All,
We can add another project to our growing list! Assemblyman Barnwell's office passed this along FYI. This is probably why some of you who live near the LIE hear noise during early morning hours. If you have any complaints or questions, reach out to Assemblyman Barnwell's office at (718) 651-3185. See the comment below from NYCDOT and attached information regarding the work that will continue through August. Roe Daraio, President COMET Civic Association www.cometcivic.com Subject: Important Notice for Painting of Hamilton Place, Grand Avenue and 69th Street bridges over the Long Island Expressway Good afternoon, In an effort to maximize efficiencies, the protective coating work being done by the NYCDOT Division of Bridges at Hamilton Place, Grand Street and 69th Street have been consolidated so that each bridge will be worked on concurrently. See the advisory and bulletin that was sent to us regarding the Accelerated water main/sewer project. A lot is going on around here all at the same time!! Remember, those of you who live on the affected block(s) will receive a 24-hour notice to shut off your water. Roe Daraio, President COMET Civic Association www.cometcivic.com Hi All,
See the attached regarding the street restoration relating to the Calamus Avenue sewer project. It's probably best to avoid this area during their work hours. Roe Daraio, President COMET Civic Association www.cometcivic.com |
