Update on previous report

2/26/2013

Hi All,

Here is follow up from DI Leyson about our Alert.  Some info was accurate and some - not so much.  In any event, a lot is going on and you need to be aware of your surroundings.  See info highlighted below. Captain Manson, 104th, said we WILL be registering bicycles and electronics on April 20th.

Roe,

A couple of things to address your e mail....

First, I have no "Burglary" on Seabury on 2/14, the job your writer is referring to she probably saw on the news.  It was an elderly female who came home and was confronted by someone in her apartment who tied her up and robbed her apartment.  That happened down on Judge St and 41 Ave.

Second, I have no Burglary or any crime on the 57 Block (or vicinity) and Seabury for that front door Burglary you mentioned.

The incidents you described around Grand/Seabury/Queens Blvd are pretty darn accurate.  The woman was NOT injured with the rock, so an assault complaint report was NOT taken, it is for reckless endangerment for creating a risk of injury.

My Anti-Crime team was in the area doing surveillance due to phone snatches in the area and were the ones who witnessed the events and jumped out.  They think they know who the "kid" is and are going to follow up.  It seems that a group of kids are coming from the high school and just being delinquents as they go to the train.  We have been on top of them making sure they don't commit the crimes and they were excessively active today.  The coffee incident is accurate also, they jumped out and checked on that woman too.

Shortly after those incidents, my Anti-Crime Team began to watch another group who came OFF the train and looked suspicious.  Within 5 minutes, they observed the group of 4 snatch a female Asian's cell phone.  the Anti-Crime guys apprehended one right away and chased the other three towards Queens Blvd.  Two of the three others were apprehended (for a total of 3 out of 4).  I was on the scene with them  They did an outstanding job being in the area and observing the suspicious people and following them and observing the actual crime.

Shortly after we all left, about 45 minutes ago, another snatch happened by a male black in a white hoody...

You are absolutely right, like I always say at every meeting, people have to be aware of their surroundings and not be consumed by their phones.

If they see something suspicious, call 911 and let US respond and investigate.

Community Alert - Assault & Earth Day event

2/25/2013

Those of you who live in Elmhurst, or Maspeth residents who park their vehicles in Elmhurst to catch the subway or go to the malls, please be alert.

A Block Captain received a call from a resident who was walking up Grand Avenue on her way home from work at about 5:30-6:00 pm this evening.  Victim was on her phone (not a good idea). As she was walking on Grand/Seabury past the school - at the driveway, she spotted four to six male black youths hanging out.  As she passed, one of the males hit her in the back of the head with a rock.  The males took off towards Queens Boulevard and the victim ran after them yelling, 'I'm calling the police'.  A plain clothes officer in a vehicle, who apparently witnessed the incident, asked her if she wanted to make a report for Assault.  She said, yes.  Other officers with him went after the youths but the victim doesn't know if they were apprehended.  The Block Captain told us that another resident spotted what appears to be the same group a couple of days ago on 54th/Van Horn.  Luckily today's victim wasn't injured or robbed.  The victim stated another woman approached the officer to say the youths hit her with a coffee cup.  Sometimes when a group of kids get together they act stupid and don't realize they could hurt someone.  Always be aware of your surroundings because maybe the next time a group may decide to rob someone. Bottom line is, if you see something suspicious or a disorderly group, call 911.

We heard two other items pertaining to Elmhurst.  Neither of these incidents have been confirmed by the 110th.  We'll probably hear more at our meeting on March 4th.

  • February 14th, Seabury Street, woman came home from work, was tied up and burglarized.
  • Today, February 25th, front door burglary at 57 #s/Seabury Street.

Good News - Celebrate Earth Day

Saturday, April 20th, 1:00 pm- 5:00 pm, 69th Street/Grand Avenue

  • Maspeth Federal will be bringing back the paper shredding truck.  Not yet confirmed - possibly the truck to recycle electronics - we'll let you know.  In the meantime, start collecting paperwork that needs to be discarded!
  • Comet will join the 104th Precinct to help VIN Etch vehicles.  You can save $$ on your theft insurance.  Everyone is welcome no matter what community you live in.  Didn't hear back from precinct, but assume we'll also be registering bicycles/electronics. We'll keep you updated.  VIN Etching can't be done if it rains.
  • If anyone can volunteer to help out that day, please let me know.

Community Alert - More burglaries

2/23/2013

We want to thank Captain Manson, 104th Precinct, for being on top of crime in his command and alerting us about two more burglaries in our area in the same vicinity as the previous ones.  His early notifications to the community and enlisting our eyes and ears are great tools to aid in the apprehension these crooks.

The burglaries occurred yesterday, Friday, February 22nd between the hours of 2:00 pm and 11:00 pm. One was 67 numbers on 52nd Avenue.  The second was on Calamus Avenue between 71st/72nd Street.  The perp(s) entered one home through a side window.  The other appears to be a rear door entry.  No property was taken in one burglary and jewelry was taken in the second.
  • Please folks, be alert!  Don't assume the burglaries are confined to one particular area and won't move to another area!
  • Entry to these homes were made from the side and rear - so it's likely perp(s) can't be seen from the street.  Neighbors need to look out for neighbors!
  • The NYPD does not know who lives on your block.  Unless they observe a crime or a resident calls 911 for a suspicious person, they cannot stop someone for no reason.  The ball is in our court!!
  • When returning home, please be cautious!  If something seems out of place, do not enter your home.  Call 911.
  • Please pass this on to others in the community!!!

More burglaries

2/14/2013

We all need to be vigilant, but folks who live in northern Maspeth/Winfield need to be on High Alert!  We were advised by a local resident, and it was confirmed by the 104th Precinct, that a burglary occurred yesterday during the day on 52nd Road off 73rd Street.  The perpetrator(s) entered the house by forcing a rear window and left through the side door.  Jewelry and small electronics were stolen.  There were no witnesses.  We reached out to the 108th Precinct and if we hear from them will let you know if there were any burglaries on their side of Calamus Avenue.

  • It might be possible the burglar(s) waited for the snow to melt to make it easier to get to rear of property.
  • Perpetrator(s) might be watching a targeted block from a vehicle or on foot a day or two before they strike.  It could also be a crime of opportunity - they see folks leaving, ring bell and when no one answers, they strike!
  • While there seems to be a burglary pattern in northern Maspeth/Winfield, everyone needs to be vigilant.  They could easily move to your block if they fear getting caught in the targeted area.
  • Call 911 if you see anything suspicious!  Give the operator as much info as you can.  Description of individual(s) and if a vehicle is involved, the make/model/plate.  Tell the operator there has been a series of burglaries in the area and you fear this person(s) may be involved.  You will not get in trouble if you are wrong.
  • Please pass this on to as many folks in the area as possible.  Speak to your neighbors and get the word out!!
In case you've forgotten, the burglary stats from our last meeting on February 4th, here they are:

Burglary arrests

2/1/2013

Hi All,

Good news.  Thanks to a sharp-eyed resident, two burglars were caught in the act breaking into a house at 62-xx 65 Street in Maspeth this past Wednesday, January 30th.  Resident spotted two males at front door, then saw them walking to rear of house.  Resident called 911.  The perpetrators live in confines of 110th Precinct, Corona/Elmhurst area, and have been arrested before.

We don't know if these individuals are responsible for the burglaries in the vicinity of Calamus Avenue, which is quite a distance from where they were arrested, so you need to be alert at all times regardless of what community you live in.

If something doesn't look right, it probably isn't. Call 911 and let your precinct investigate. You won't get in trouble if you're mistaken.  If you're right, we'll get some crooks off the street.  If they commit a crime in our area and get away with it, they'll definitely come back again.

Don't forget our COMET meeting will be held this Monday, February 4th, 7:00 pm, 85-20 57th Avenue.  Directions on our website.  We'll have opportunity to hear everything that's been going on in our area.

Please pass on to others in the community.
