Community Alert! BE ON LOOKOUT!

9/26/2013

Hi All,

Vice President Dick Gundlach passed on the following information about a possible attempted burglary:

Time:  approximately 9:30-9:40 am this morning, Thursday 10/26.

Location: 72nd Street between 51st and
Calamus  Avenues, Woodside/Winfield

Two residents spotted an unfamiliar female  Hispanic, 30-35 years old on her cell phone walking up and down 72nd Street  SIX times.  One of the residents on his way to work, who we  believe was the target, heard her say in Spanish "second".  At the time, the  resident thought nothing about it.  Soon after he got a call from ADT saying his alarm went off.  He lives in the "second" house!

When he returned, the 108th Precinct had responded and found no sign of a break-in.  However, this was very coincidental  considering what the resident observed/heard prior to leaving.

The only other details Dick could get was that there was a male Hispanic sitting in a van nearby.  No color of  vehicle or  description of male or female.  This location is across the street  from Maspeth/104th Precinct and just a couple of blocks from
Elmhurst/110th Precinct.

Please folks, if something seems out of place, CALL 911.  Let the police check it out.  You won't get into trouble if you're wrong!  Make sure that no one is watching you leave your  house when going to work or the store.

Hi All,

See message from DI Leyson below.  Please get the word out to everyone!  Keep your eyes open and report anyone suspicious to 911.  Females should make sure they're not being followed!  Those of you who have a whistle keep it handy while walking!  A perpetrator won't wait for you to dial your cell phone and call 911.  We'll bring more whistles to our 10/5 event.  This is right on the Maspeth border and not far from Woodside/Winfield!!  We all need to be careful!

---------- Forwarded message ----------
Roe,

on Monday at approximately 1240 AM, a female Hispanic, 20 years old was walking on Grand Ave and 79 St and reports she was grabbed from behind and pulled into Elmhurst Park where the perp tried to forcefully remove her purse.  She struggled and retained her property.  At this time the perp did knock her to the ground and got on top of her, touching her breast and pulling at her pants.  He then took her headphones and fled.

The perps description is an unknown male with light skin and wavy/curly hair. 5'5", 140 lbs.

Please advise all to be cautious when traveling, especially alone and remain aware of your surroundings.  Do Not wear your earphones or ear buds in your ears because you can't hear someone coming.

Community alert - robbery

9/12/2013

Hi All,

Captain Manson, 104th Precinct, said that yesterday, 6:00 pm, 57th Avenue/Mazeau Street in Maspeth, a male white 28-year old victim walking home from the pizza place was struck in the back of his head by an unknown object.  Wallet was taken and $40 stolen.  Victim did not see perpetrator - there might have been two of them.  (For those of you who don't know where Mazeau Street is, it's between Grand/57th Avenue and the LIE service road near PS58.)

Please be careful walking down side streets.  Make sure you're not being followed.  Stay in well-lit areas.  If you see anyone suspicious, call 911.

FYI - Burglary arrest

9/10/2013

Captain Hennessy, 108th Precinct, said they effected an arrest for a burglary on the 72 block of Calamus Avenue.  Believe the arrest was made today because he didn't mention it at our meeting last night. The perpetrator hit the location two times in a week at end of July/August.  You might recall we sent you an email with picture of the perpetrator previously.  Great job, 108th!!  Hopefully now things will stay quiet on the Maspeth, Elmhurst, Woodside border.

FYI - Good news and bad!

9/8/2013

 Hi All,

Good news:  On Friday, I received a call from Councilman Van Bramer's office to let us know that the proposed site for another MTA bus depot in west Maspeth was dead.  I no sooner hung up the phone - Christina sent this link.

We want to thank Councilman Van Bramer for fighting this battle in City Hall and protesting with us - his support was crucial!  We also want to thank Christina Wilkinson for discovering Brooklyn's plan to dump their unwanted depot in Maspeth, calling it to our attention and working with us on the civic end.  Great job!!!

Bad news:  An Elmhurst member sent this to us.  How low can a criminal go?  If you recognize this individual, please contact NYPD.

Burglary & new scam reported; COMET meeting Monday!

9/7/2013

Hi All,

Captain Manson, 104th Precinct, advised us of a burglary and possible new scam.  He is also looking into two incidents that someone from west Maspeth called to our attention.  We will advise you when we hear back from him.

  • The burglary occurred on 9/4, 53-xx 63rd Street, between hours of 6:00-9:00 pm when homeowners went to store.  Back window found open, bedrooms ransacked and among things stolen were 12 watches worth $9,000.  Even if you leave home for a few minutes, make sure all windows/doors are secured.  You don't know who is watching!!
  • Be forewarned:  Middle Village resident received call from unknown person saying that they had to pay $499 for new rear meter installation.  Homeowner called utility company and was told they did not call.  Woodside/Winfield folks could be very vulnerable to this type of scam because of pre-sewer work being done by utility companies. This can happen to anyone, anywhere.  BEWARE!
Please pass on to others in our area and don't forget our meeting on Monday!

104 Community Alert:

Over the last week we have had an individual riding a bicycle around the community snatching phones from distracted victims. The most recent event occurred on Friday August 30, 2013 in front of 71-xx 65 Place in Glendale. The victim was texting on her phone when a male Black/Hispanic 5' 8, 180 lbs on a black and silver bicycle rode up and snatched her I Phone out of her hands. The victim was not injured.

We ask no matter where you are at please be aware of your surroundings at all times. Especially when you are using one of these high priced phones or devices (I Phone, Samsung Galaxy, etc). If a perpetrator sees that you are distracted while using one of these devices, they can make you a target.

In addition, the 104 Precinct has taken multiple reports from victims after they were contacted via phone from an unknown individual demanding money under the threat of harm to a family member. The number from which this perpetrator calls from differs.

If anyone is contacted by anyone who demands money under the threat of force, please call 911 immediately. This crime is not exclusive to the 104 Precinct, there have been victims of this crime throughout the City.
