Community alert - Robbery in Elmhurst

8/20/2014

I am on vacation but saw a Robbery from Saturday morning (Friday night into Sat) at 4:30 AM.

A 60 year old Woman was walking home‎ from work and was approached in front of 85-02 57 Road by an unknown male wearing a gray mask and stated "Give me what you have or you're going to be in trouble". She handed over $600 and he fled on foot. No injuries. No weapons.

Please have everyone remain alert. Have their whistle out when walking in case they need it. Stay in well lit areas when possible. If they become victims try to get the best description possible. Clothing, facial hair, hair color/type, race etc. I know it is a difficult and traumatic experience but every little clue could help up catch the person responsible.

Hotel Check-In Credit Card Scam

8/19/2014

This is something everyone who plans on traveling and staying in a hotel should be aware of.

You arrive at your hotel and check in  at the front desk.

Typically when  checking in, you give the front desk your credit card (for any charges  to your room).

You go to your room and settle in.   All is good.

The hotel receives a call and the caller asks for (as an example) room  620 - which happens to be  your room.

The phone rings in your room. You answer and the person on the other end says the following:

'This is the front desk. When checking in, we  came across a problem with your charge card information. Please re-read  me your credit card  numbers and verify the last 3 digits numbers at the  reverse side of  your charge card.'

Not thinking anything wrong, since the  call seems to come from the  front desk you oblige.

But actually, it  is a scam by someone calling from outside the hotel.

They have asked for a random room number, then ask you for your credit card and  address information.

They sound so professional, that you think you are talking to the front desk.

If you ever encounter this scenario on your travels, tell the caller that you will be down to the front desk to clear up any problems.

Then,  go to the front desk or call directly and ask if there was a problem.  If there was none, inform the manager of the hotel that someone tried to scam you of your credit card information, acting like a front desk employee.

__________

A Female Asian woman was walking on Haspel St & 55 Ave Monday morning at 7:30 when a male Hispanic approx 25 years old  walking in the opposite direction reached out and grabbed her breast and fled.  As the female got to the intersection of 55 Ave and Van Horn St, the perpetrator reappeared and grabbed her breast again.  This time the female screamed and the perpetrator fled.

Please tell everyone to remain alert, cross the street if you are alone and see a suspicious person coming in your direction and if anything like this happens, scream or blow a whistle (like the ones given out by COMET) to get peoples attention.

Ronald D. Leyson
Deputy Inspector
Commanding Officer, 110th Precinct

PO Rivera said that last night at 9:43 pm a call came in with regard to a female being assaulted. The Asian female, 35 years old, was found lying in front of 88-53 53rd Avenue with multiple stab wounds. She told officers at the scene that she had a verbal argument with her boyfriend, an Asian male, 37 years old. Minutes later, a male caller stated that a male, who matched the description of her boyfriend, was in an alley at Justice Avenue/53rd Avenue. When the police responded they found the boyfriend with a self-inflicted laceration to the throat. Both victims were taken to Elmhurst Hospital and are not likely to die. The boyfriend had one prior arrest for domestic violence.
