COMET meeting tomorrow

10/16/2016

Hi All,

It's been a busy month and we have lots to talk about at our meeting this Monday, October 17th, 7:00 pm sharp, at St. Adalbert Parish Center, lower level, 52-40 84th Street.

Agenda

104th, 108th, 110th Precincts will give us our crime stats for the past 28 days. We are interested in hearing about any unusual incidents, as well as any incidents involving our homeless hotels - Metro Motel homeless shelter, Pan Am homeless shelter and the newly opened Holiday Inn homeless shelter.

Roman Paprocki from Council Member Crowley's office will update us about her lawsuit and any other information relating to the Holiday Inn homeless shelter debacle.

Debbie Cox, a Maspeth resident who is an attorney, will give us an update on the community's effort to end the practice of hotels being used as homeless shelters.

Sebastian Maguire from Council Member Dromm's office will talk about the State legislation that was passed relating to zombie houses (empty, abandoned homes) and how it may help us address the issue of derelict properties in Maspeth, Elmhurst and Woodside/Winfield.

Marialena Giampino, a member of Community Board 4 and Newtown Civic, wants start a grass-root effort to rezone Elmhurst. She believes new development is out-of-character with the neighborhood and would like to see the many one and two family homes preserved. She will give a brief presentation. We will need to take a vote as to whether or not we want to support this effort. If so, we would need some volunteers to work on this project (don't look at me, I have enough to do. lol) which would entail working on fundraisers, etc. She will explain.

Hope to see you all on Monday!

Increase in Maspeth burglaries

10/16/2016

Hi All,

PO Edwin Collado, our 104th Crime Prevention Officer, has been walking around Maspeth ringing doorbells and leaving burglary prevention fliers in doors, a copy of which is attached, to warn people to be careful. He is only one person and is doing his best to cover our neighborhood.

Captain Wachter will tell us where the burglaries are occurring at our meeting on Monday.

Many of the burglaries are occurring in homes where windows have been left open or where homeowners have not locked up their shed.

Burglaries can occur anywhere. A couple of the burglaries occurred near the Woodside/Winfield border and not too far from Elmhurst. We all need to keep our eyes open.

Please be alert and call 911 if you spot any suspicious activity!!

Speed bumps approved for 58th Place and 72nd Street

10/13/2016

Hi All,

Community Board 5 sent us the attached letters to let us know that two locations on 72nd Street were approved for speed bumps and two locations on 58th Place were approved for speed bumps.

Hopefully the speed bumps will help slow down traffic on these narrow streets.

Update on Maspeth drug arrests and flyer for Maspeth fundraiser

10/4/2016

Picture
Hi All,

Good news! Captain Mark Wachter, 104th Precinct,  wants the community to know that they did arrest two individuals today in regards to a narcotics/ burglary investigation at an apartment on 71st Street/52nd Avenue.

We want to thank the 104th for the great work they're doing in Maspeth!

Attached is flier about a fundraiser that is being held to raise money for buses to go to various locations in order to fight the proposed Maspeth homeless shelter at the Holiday Inn. If you can't make the fundraiser, you might want to stop by with a contribution.
