Wanted for West Maspeth burglary

6/20/2014

Hi All,

This was sent to us by the 104th Precinct. The photo isn't too clear but you may know who this person is or may have seen him around our area. Burglars move around from place to place so they won't get caught. I'm sure this isn't the first burglary he committed. Please keep your eyes open when walking/driving around the neighborhood especially those of you who live or work in west Maspeth! This occurred at 3:20 pm on June 9th.

If you think you see him, call 911. When the Operator asks "what is the nature of the emergency" tell the Operator that the 104th Precinct is looking for a male who committed a burglary that matches the description of this person. The Operator will ask where the person is and you can give a location.

If English is not your main language, 911 Operators are able to transfer you to an Operator who speaks your language. You will not get into trouble if you make a mistake and the police will never give out your name.

This is our community and we all need to stick together!

Please pass this on to your friends and neighbors even if they don't live in Maspeth.

Samaritan Village proposes homeless shelter at Pan Am

6/10/2014

Hi All,

It has come to our attention that Samaritan Village made a proposal to place about 200 homeless in the Pan Am Hotel, Queens Boulevard at Hillyer Street. Some are children who will be attending our already overcrowded schools. This plan is supported by the Mayor and the Comptroller. 36 families have already been placed there. Please see Councilman Daniel Dromm's comment below.

This hotel is a block or two from Woodside and a stone's throw from Maspeth via 51st Avenue.

We are planning to stage a protest rally next week on Tuesday, June 17th, beginning at 6:00 pm outside the hotel RAIN OR SHINE. It is imperative that EVERYONE attend to let our voices be heard. Please tell your neighbors they need to get involved!!!

Statement from Councilman Daniel Dromm

“I am deeply concerned that the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) plans to use the old Pan Am Hotel on Queens Boulevard as a homeless shelter,” said NYC Council Member Daniel Dromm.  “Elmhurst has already had to bear a huge burden of services for the less fortunate.  One block away is the Metro Motel, another homeless shelter.   I am upset that I was only informed that 36 homeless families would be given shelter at the Pan Am hotel as it was actually happening at around 4:45 PM last Friday night.  My office and our community were given no advance notice.  The hotel has 216 rooms.  I believe it is bad policy to bring that many needy people into one place.  While I recognize and support the need to house our homeless, I believe that this number is way too large.  While DHS has promised my office added security and additional social services at the site, I still believe Elmhurst is overburdened.”

Community alert - car break-ins!

6/9/2014

Hi All,

Received email below from Elmhurst member. See what she says and read DI Leyson's response from 110th Precinct. It's very possible we had two car break-ins and only one person took the initiative to report it.

Some folks think there's no use reporting the crime because they won't get their valuables back and the perpetrator won't be apprehended. Yes, they probably won't get anything back but if they don't report the police cannot determine a crime pattern and put coverage in our area. If you don't have time to report right away, you can always report later.
  • Please, don't leave anything in your vehicle that might be of value!
  • Apparently someone is going into driveways checking cars. If you have outside lights, leave them on.
  • IMPORTANT you tell your neighbors. All of you know better but apparently your neighbors don't. Let's not make our neighborhood an easy target!!
  • Folks are starting to turn on air conditioners and it's hard to hear what's going on outside. Look out your windows often!!
  • If you see something suspicious, call 911 immediately!

********************

My neighbor told me about 2 cars that were broken in to by the walkover bridge by Haspel and 55th Avenue. The cars were parked in their driveways. One person said she locked the car but they got in somehow, rummaged thru the car and stole some change.

The second car, not sure of the details, if it was locked or what was stolen

Will see what else I can find out.

I believe both break-ins were on 55th Avenue off 84th Street but not sure.  It was across the bridge from our side, closer to your side.

********************

I  had them run it. On Tuesday into Wed we had 2 auto breaks. One on the 8400 Block of 55 Rd in a driveway between 1700 Tues and 0930Wed. $200 cash taken.

The second was 8200 block of Saint James. Sunglasses and iPods were taken. Again NO DAMAGE to the vehicle. This leads us to believe someone was walking around (even in peoples driveways) pulling door handles until they got in.

The third incident was Sat in the rear lot of the Boulevard Motor Inn. A window was broken but nothing taken.
