Community Alert - Yard Creeper

5/31/2012

Picture
This may be a "yard creeper" in Comet Land. This is a picture from a security camera in vicinity of 86 St and 56 Ave of a male stealing a bike from inside a fenced yard last night at 8:05 PM. 911 was not called, this was a walk in complaint today at the 110th Pct.  Anyone with any information is to please contact Sergeant Joe Tarsio at the 110th Precinct.

Community Alert - Burglary suspects captured!

5/30/2012

See message from Captain Cody, 104th Precinct regarding 108th Precinct arrests! This good news doesn't mean you should let your guard down!   There's plenty more perpetrators out there looking for victims!
__________

Good morning all: Regarding the overnight Burglaries in Middle Village/Maspeth area that I advised you of last week - I am happy to report that 2 arrests have been made. Members of the 108 Precinct, on routine patrol Monday afternoon, observed a Burglary in progress and apprehended an individual named Jefferson Villarama. The 108 Precinct apprehended Villarama committing a Burglary in the area of 51 Avenue and 63 Street - and that is what triggered investigation and subsequent additional charges. The officers immediately advised Detectives from the 108 Precinct who subsequently notified me and the 104 Precinct Detective Squad. After an investigation, Villarama was linked with committing 8 Burglaries in the confines of the 104 Precinct: these were recent overnight incidents and span Middle Village as well as Maspeth.  An accomplice was also apprehended as well as numerous proceeds from these crimes. Villarama was also linked into, and charged with, 5 additional Burglaries that occurred in the 108 and 105 Precincts. This arrest should certainly affect the recent condition.  However I will continue to focus additional assets in the area. Please contact me if any questions/concerns.

All the best

Community Alert - Burglary arrest

5/21/2012

Elmhurst burglary arrest near Maspeth/Middle Village border Captain Mark Wachter, Executive Officer of the 110th Precinct, notifed Comet that they made a burglary arrest yesterday, on Sunday afternoon/early evening, on 84th Street/52nd Avenue.  Comet VP Richie Doyle was on the scene. It appears that the perpetrator tried to make entry through the rear sliding door.  As of last night, they were still checking the identity of the perp.  How much do you want to bet this isn't his first burglary??   I'm sure we'll hear more at our meeting on June 4th. There's more burglars out there and oftentimes they target the rear or side of a house so they can't be seen from the street!  The best chance of catching a burglar is an alert neighbor!

Community Alert - Vandalism

5/21/2012

  • Comet was notified that last night or early this morning someone allegedly poured white paint on 4 parked cars on 54th Avenue between Seabury and Van Horn Streets in Elmhurst. We were told the police were called.  If anyone finds damage such as this, please call the police like these folks did so the precinct can keep a record of where crime is occurring.  Vandals tend to move around.  Look out your window and if you see suspicious activity, call 911!
  • Some folks in Elmhurst are finding snakes in their yards.  These snakes are not poisonous and are very good for the environment.  They like to eat mice too!!  Just be aware of this when working in your yard.
  • The rat problem on 74th/53rd Road - Council Member Crowley's office has notified the Health Department.  We're waiting for a response from the agency.
  • Graffiti swastikas were found in Maspeth a few weeks ago.  A local newspaper showed a swastika graffitied on the railroad overpass at 48th Ave/69th St in Woodside in this week's paper.  Please keep an eye out and report this activity!!

Community Alert - RATS!

5/18/2012

Over the past couple of weeks Comet has been getting complaints about rat sightings, even during the day, in the vicinity of 74th Street/53rd Road.  I have now been told that the emotionally disturbed man, who a couple of years ago built a huge house made of trash behind Stop & Shop on the railroad tracks, is now living behind the old Blockbuster site and is allegedly feeding the rats!  I heard this from more than one person.
  • I've emailed Council Member Crowley's office and asked that they reach out to the Health Department bait the area as soon as possible.  I also asked that they get someone to come and evaluate the homeless man.  The 104th Precinct was also notified about the individual.
  • Several folks on 70th Street have had mice in their house.  This is probably a result of the wet weather we've had for the past couple of weeks.  It's doubtful that 70th Street is the only block with the problem!
  • Mice and rats carry diseases.  They are all over - not just in northern Maspeth - or contained to one block.  Please put down traps - away from children and pets.  Just because you don't see them doesn't mean they're not around!
  • When walking in the vicinity of 74th Street, please be alert.
  • If I get any updates, I'll let you know.

We have had a BIG spike in burglaries in Woodside (Winfield/Wynwoode Gardens) during the past 28 days!  The 108th Precinct is giving the area special attention, but remember - YOU know your neighbors - the police don't.  YOU need to keep an eye out in the front and rear of your home and call 911 if you see anyone suspicious. 108th Precinct burglaries:
  • 65th/50th Ave
  • 69th/47th Ave
  • 65th/48th Ave
  • 61st/50th Ave
  • 66th/46th Ave
  • 65th/50th Ave
  • 63rd/48th Ave
  • 65th/51st Ave
  • 72nd/51st Dr
104th Precinct burglaries:
  • 70th between Calamus/52nd Av
  • 67th/58th Ave
  • 57-62 Maurice - commercial
  • Flushing Ave - truck
110th Precinct burglaries:
  • Seabury/58th - unlocked front door
  • Manilla/51st - unlocked front door
  • 80th/54th - unlocked rear door
  • Queens Blvd/82nd - cable wire
Woodside/Maspeth folks need to call 911 immediately to report a suspicious person(s) in the area including your community drive.  This activity is right on the border!  Elmhurst folks not only need to keep a watchful eye - but lock your doors!!  Please pass this on to others in our area!!

Buses vs. trucks at PS 58

5/8/2012

These were taken 2:30 on Fri May 4th by COMET member Rosalie Greer.  As you can see, the school buses were double parked on 57th ave & in the "no standing" area next to the school on the triangle. Jackie (school crossing guard) was telling the bus drivers to move out of the way and let the truck have room to turn. They never moved. Some of the buses didn't have drivers in them either. It held up traffic toward Grand Ave & 57 Ave. Oh yeah, since school was about to let out there were a number of parents around.
