Good news from the 108th Precinct!!

3/31/2019

Picture
Our 108th Precinct NCO, PO Kaplan, sent us the following message. It's short and sweet but says it all!

See attached.

Thanks for helping us resolve this ongoing quality of life problem.

To all,

The tow yards are full!  Instead, we’ve been seizing bogus license plates to facilitate further and easier removal of derelict vehicles going forward.  Expect the parking to continue improving soon!

Maspeth burglary

3/30/2019

Hi All,

NCO PO Nisbett, 104th Precinct, has advised me that we had a burglary on Mazeau Street on March 28th between the hours of 0600-1930. US currency was stolen.

That's all the info I have right now. I'm sure we'll get more details at Monday's meeting.

COMET Meeting + Spoofing Calls

3/29/2019

Hi All,

Our COMET meeting will be held this Monday, April 1st, 7:00 pm sharp, in St. Adalbert Parish Center, lower level, 52-40 84th Street.

We'll put our electeds' reps up first since we take a lot of time with the NYPD and we don't want to hold the representatives prisoner. lol

Important message from our Maspeth, 72nd Place, Block Captain

Hi Roe,

Wanted to alert you and the group to calls that are likely to be scams.  Over the last week I had many missed calls from 212-243-1900.  I don't recognize the number, so I don't answer.  But when they were calling several times a day I decided to Google the number.  It showed up as Con Edison.

Well I called the number (and it WAS Con Ed) the rep told me they have been receiving many complaints from customers who are seeing missed calls but no messages are left for them.  The rep said it's likely someone is "spoofing" the number - meaning having caller ID show that # and the name Con Edison when in fact it is not.  The rep assured me they did not call me and that my accounts were in good standing.

Btw, I received several of these calls too!! The phone rings once and they hang up.

Hope to see everyone on Monday.

108th Precinct Tow

3/28/2019

Hi All,

No one could be happier than Block Captain Toni Guillen when she spotted officers from the 108th Precinct towing a couple of vehicles that have been taking up much-need parking spaces in the vicinity of Calamus Avenue and 74th Street yesterday afternoon. PO Bernstein and PO Bentz were nice enough to pose for a photo (see attached). lol

Good job, 108th!

Robbery/Attempted Robbery

3/27/2019

Hi All,

We had two incidents that occurred that I want to share with you.

On Sunday, March 24th, approximately 12:40 pm, in the schoolyard of IS5, 51st Avenue/Jacobus Street in Elmhurst, a 17 year old male was approached by five unknown males. One of the males struck him with closed fists, the victim fell  to the ground and was kicked to the body and head by the perpetrator. The perpetrator then took the victim's bicycle and fled southbound on Ireland Street. We are pleased to report the 110th Precinct Warrant Team apprehended the perpetrator. Identification was made through the Detective Squad's investigation.

On Monday, March 25th, at approximately 6:00 pm, in the vicinity of 72nd Place/Calamus Avenue in Woodside, a teenage male from IS5 was accosted by two unknown teenage males who attempted to rob him of his cell phone and wallet. This investigation is ongoing with the 104th Precinct Detective Squad. Our NCOs did a canvas of the area to look at any available video. If you live in this area and do have a video camera, please go back to the approximate day/time to see if you have any information that may help.

We have our meeting on Monday and you will have the opportunity to ask any followup questions then.

In the meantime, please keep a lookout and report any suspicious activity.

Great arrest by 110th Precinct!

3/22/2019

Hi All,

Good news! Someone saw something AND said something!

At approximately 3:00 am on Tuesday morning, March 19th, the 110th Precinct received a 911 call from an individual stating two suspicious males were tampering with the mailbox on Grand Avenue at Queens Boulevard. The individuals were no longer at the location when the sector car arrived, but the officers spotted a vehicle nearby that matched the description given over 911.

The officers pulled over the vehicle and as they were speaking with the occupants they spotted a cord or wire in the cup holder of the vehicle. When one of the officers shined a light into the rear of the vehicle he saw glue traps strewn all over and clearly visible were approximately 40+ checks that were most likely going to be "washed".  The perpetrators "wash" off the information on the check, change the amount, etc. and then cash it for a large sum of money. (A glue trap is tied to a cord or wire and dropped into the mailbox to pull out the mail.)

PO Saponieri, 110th Precinct Community Affairs, said many of the envelopes in the vehicle had addresses in the vicinity of Grand Avenue.

This arrest would not have been possible if it were not for the witness who provided a detailed description of the perpetrators and the vehicle they were driving. These individuals have prior arrests but at his time we don't know what prior crimes they committed or whether these men were from our area. Perhaps we'll hear more at our meeting on April 1st.

Please, if you must mail a letter in a mailbox that hasn't been retrofitted, make sure it's mailed near the pickup time posted on the mailbox.

One burglary on Jacobus, through the rear, on 2/24
Car break-in on 79th Street at Grand Avenue on 3/9 about 2:00 pm.
IMPORTANT - Someone is watching!
We had at least one burglary that occurred when the homeowner left for only a couple of hours. Someone must have been watching! Burglars usually watch a location to make sure no one is home. If you have a "pattern" of leaving your house at a particular time, be alert and make sure no one is watching. If you or your neighbors see a suspicious person sitting in a car, etc. call 911. You won't get in trouble if you're mistaken but you very well may deter a burglar!

COMET meeting canceled

3/1/2019

Hi All,

I spoke with COMET's officers and they unanimously agree that we cancel tomorrow's meeting. We still have snow from the last snowfall and I'm hearing anything from 5-8 more inches tonight. Parking is at a premium and there will be slippery conditions tomorrow night when the temperature drops. Better safe than sorry!

Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 1st and hopefully we'll be done with the snow.

If you have to go to work tomorrow, or want to know when your street was plowed you may want to check the website below.
