Burglary and Suspicious Person

1/30/2013

Burglary
  • January 24th, home on 72nd Street between 51st/Calamus Avenue was burglarized.  House had alarm.  We subsequently found out another house on same block was burglarized a week earlier.  Residents state they saw male who is not known to them on block during time of both burglaries. These incidents occurred on Woodside/108th side of street.
  • Found out today we had another burglary yesterday (not confirmed by NYPD) on 72nd Place just off Calamus Avenue on Maspeth/104th side of street.  If true, this location a stone's throw from two prior burglaries.
Suspicious
  • Last week, resident spotted male on foot taking photos of several houses on 70th Street between 52nd Drive/53rd Avenue.
  • This morning, another resident spotted what is believed to be same male in Chrysler PT Cruiser, dark-color, driving down 70th on same block.  This time he took a photo of one house on one side of street, and as he was driving toward 53rd Avenue he had arm out window.  Resident said it appeared as if he was video taping.
  • Oddly enough, an Elmhurst resident who lives on 53rd Avenue between Van Horn/Haspel said they saw male on foot taking photos of a house just before Christmas.  He took photo from a distance and then a close shot of address.
  • None of these incidents were reported.
Let's face it, it's not illegal to stand on a block, nor is it illegal to take photos.  If you're hesitant to call 911 for a suspicious person, keep a close eye on individual(s) and get as many details as possible - date, time, location, clothing, vehicle/plate/color etc.  If something does happen, you can pass info onto your precinct.

Please stress to your neighbors importance of staying alert!!

Community Alert - Burglaries!

1/25/2013

Hi All,

Got further info from our Comet member who has been canvassing neighbors on 72nd Street about today's burglary.  Add this info to our first email below. Here's what he's heard:

  • This is the second burglary on 72nd Street!  Apparently a house across the street was broken into through the rear just last week.  Cash was stolen.  We were not told about this burglary so we couldn't tell the community to be on the lookout.
  • The burglary today was through a front window that was pried open.  Jewelry was stolen.
  • We believe the first burglary victim is Vietnamese and a business owner. Today's burglary victim is Hispanic and is also a business owner.  We don't know if this is a coincidence.
  • The son of the first victim said he saw a tall thin Indian male getting into a dark blue vehicle, possibly a Honda, at the time of the burglary last week.  He was wearing a hoodie!  Wonder if it was the same guy seen by our second victim??
  • We don't know if this guy with the hoodie is related to the burglaries, but keep your eyes pealed just in case!
  • Don't forget - Call 911 if you see anything suspicious!!  This is being sent to all our precincts. If a call comes in about a suspicious tall thin male with a hoodie in a dark blue vehicle, they might connect it to the possible suspect responsible for the burglaries on 72nd Street!

Subject: Community Alert - Burglary

Hi All,

A little after 5:00 pm this evening, January 24th, a downstairs resident on 72nd Street between 51st/Calamus Avenue heard the house alarm go off.  He then heard movement upstairs.  He went outside, called the homeowner to make sure no one was supposed to be home and then called 911.

A Comet member who lives on the block asked the resident if he's seen anything suspicious lately.  The resident, who was shaken up, did say he saw a thin male wearing a black hoodie walking on the block a couple of times a week or so ago.  He said he thinks he may have been smoking marijuana.  It's not known if this individual was the burglar casing the block.  The Comet member told him next time he sees something odd like that, to call the police.

  • It appears perpetrator waited until it got dark to break in.  At this point we don't know if anything was stolen.
  • House alarm didn't seem to deter him.
  • This occurred on the border of all three communities so we all need to be alert!
  • Call 911 if you see strangers on your block looking at houses or for anything suspicious that looks like it may lead to a crime!!
  • Please pass this on to others in our area so they can be on the lookout too.

DI Cody transferred

1/24/2013

Hi All,

I'm sorry to tell you that DI Michael Cody, 104th Precinct, was transferred today and is going to the 115th Precinct in Jackson Heights.  The new Commanding Officer of the 104th will be Captain Christopher Manson, formerly the Executive Officer of the 114th Precinct in Astoria . Those of you who had the opportunity to work with DI Cody, know what an asset he was to both the 104th as well as the community.  He will certainly be missed! Captain Manson has big shoes to fill!

Don't forget - the 104th Community Council will be meeting next Wednesday, January 30th at Maspeth Town Hall at 7:30 pm.  I'm sure you'll have the opportunity to say goodbye to DI Cody and meet the new Commanding Officer.  Our Comet meeting will be on Monday, February 2nd at the Bethzatha Church at 85-20 57th Avenue.  Mark you calendar!
