In response to the large number of community complaints about the loud, low flying planes flying over our community oftentimes one or two minutes apart, Assembly Member Marge Markey has been able to arrange a meeting for us with the Port Authority at Maspeth Town Hall, 53-37 72nd Street, Wednesday, November 6th at 7:00 pm. If you are affected by the noise, it is imperative that you attend to let your voice be heard - there's strength in numbers! As I'm typing this email, the planes are flying over constantly. Let's act now to put a stop to it!! Please mark your calendars and pass this along to others in the community. Roe Daraio, President Comet Civic Association www.cometcivic.com Hi All,
Just received a call from Captain Manson, 104th Precinct, concerning a possible new scam. The incident occurred on Tuesday 10/15 but was just reported. Tuesday, 10/15, 10:30 am, 73rd Place/57th Avenue, Maspeth - Asian male 63-year old victim. Victim was approached by two male Hispanics in their 50's. They said they were looking for an envelope they dropped and accused the victim of taking it. When the victim said he didn't find an envelope, perpetrators asked him to let them see his wallet. He showed them his wallet and subsequently realized $500 was missing. Most likely one perpetrator distracted the victim while the other took the money. This can happen to anyone, anywhere. Don't fall for it! Report incidents to the NYPD so they will be aware of what's going on. Heard from member on 72nd Street in Maspeth that folks awoke this past Sunday morning to find slashed tires on about 1/2 dozen cars - two around the corner from Frank's Deli (72nd Place/53rd Road). Another member said he heard 25-30 vehicles - each had a tire slashed in the same vicinity. A possible description of the vandal is a male about 25 years old with a hoodie. I reached out to Captain Manson, 104th Precinct. He said the precinct has four reports for slashed tires but did not provide a description of the vandal. Regardless of how many vehicles were vandalized, the NYPD only knows how many were actually reported. The more crime reported in an area means the more chance of police presence. That's why it's important to make a police report if something happens. You need to stress this to your neighbors! Everyone needs to stay alert - this is close to the Elmhurst/Woodside border!! Roe Daraio, President Comet Civic Association Hi All,
Comet has received numerous complaints about commuter vans from folks in Maspeth, Elmhurst and Woodside/Winfield. Council Member Elizabeth Crowley has introduced a bill, Intro 635-A, that takes a step to allow more transparency with regard to commuter van companies and their routes. At the present time, it is difficult - if not impossible - to find out what commuter vans are operating in a given community, community board or council district. It would also allow for input from the community boards and council members. This is your opportunity to voice your support and bring up concerns that you have with regard to these vans! Instructions follow and Intro 635-A is attached. There will be a hearing on October 31, 2013 on Council Member Crowley’s commuter van legislation. You or any interested party can e-mail a statement to Lyle Frank, counsel to the Transportation Committee, by the hearing date, to comment on the legislation. Mr. Frank’s e-mail address is [email protected]. Please also cc [email protected]. If you would like to attend this hearing in person, the New York City Council Committee on Transportation will hold a hearing on Thursday, October 31, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in the 14th Floor Committee Room, 250 Broadway, New York, NY regarding this bill.
