Controlled Blasting - updated information

4/3/2023

Councilman Holden's office has provided additional information regarding the controlled blasting.
During a recent site visit, a staff member of our office had the opportunity to speak with two individuals who are part of the sandhog team currently working on the excavation project. According to them, the diameter of the hole currently stands at 60 feet wide, and they have successfully reached a depth of 250 feet after encountering bedrock. The team is utilizing a blasting technique to remove approximately 10 feet of rock with each blast to continue excavating toward their goal of reaching the water tunnel.
Notably, the team still needs to remove an additional 350 feet of rock from the shaft to achieve a total depth of 600 feet. As they progress deeper, a reduction in shaft diameter and a decrease in blasting vibrations are anticipated. It is important to note that the team's sole focus is to continue excavating downwards towards the water tunnel. Once the water tunnel is accessed, the team will focus on completing the shaft walls, which is expected to take years.

As always, do not hesitate to contact our office for more information.

Best

Alicia Vaichunas
Deputy Chief of Staff
Council Member Robert F. Holden (CD30)
