Local news/update

12/29/2021

  • We ask that you please be patient when placing a call for service. All of our agencies, including police, fire, sanitation, etc. are working with reduced personnel because of the COVID uptick. For example many, if not all, of our NCOs have been taken off their regular duties to respond to calls for service.
  • Deceased male: Many folks saw police presence, crime tape and the coroner's office yesterday in LI Mews Park (aka Butterfly Park) which is located on 51st Avenue at 74th Street in Woodside, Tuesday, 12/28. We DID NOT get official notification from the 108th Precinct regarding the incident, but this is what we heard from reliable sources: At 11:00 am a 911 call came in reporting a male slumped on a bench. It was determined that the male was deceased. At this time, the death is being labeled as "natural causes" and an investigation is ongoing. If we hear any updates we'll let you know.
  • Our 110th Precinct NCO PO Martinez, who just returned to work after testing positive for COVID, thought we'd be interested in hearing that on December 13th three males were arrested for the theft of catalytic converters in the 111th Precinct in Bayside. Hopefully this arrest will lower the numbers of these ongoing thefts.
108th Precinct update on deceased male

Good afternoon

On Tuesday 12/28 an unidentified male was found unresponsive on a park bench at LI Mews Park (51 Ave and 74 street) at approximately 6am. Medical Examiner labeled the cause of death  natural causes.
Detectives on the case have identified the deceased and will be making notifications to the family.

Hello,

I hope everybody is staying safe during these difficult times.  I wanted to write you to let you know we will be having a COVID testing location at our District Office (55-19 69th Street) on January 2nd, from 10:30am-5:30pm.  No advance appointment is necessary.

We will also be announcing other testing dates/times throughout the whole Assembly District as well (as soon as they are confirmed).  We are doing everything we can to secure more testing sites, but please review this link to look up current testing sites.

https://www.nychealthandhospitals.org/covid-19-testing-sites

Those that are immunocompromised or those 65 and older may be able to schedule an at-home testing appointment.  To schedule an in-home appointment, you would need to call 929-298-9400 between 9:00 AM and 7:00 PM (7 days a week).

Stay safe!

Sincerely,

Brian Barnwell

Mystery of vibrations/humming noise solved

12/21/2021

A Maspeth resident who lives on 70th Street near 53rd Avenue reached out to say she was feeling vibrations. We asked around and no one else was feeling them.

This past weekend COMET President Roe Daraio, who also lives on 70th Street, was lying in bed and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights and at about 11:00 pm she also felt them. The vibrations were low, but still unnerving. Lo and behold, a resident on Calamus Avenue in Woodside reached out and said while she was trying to sleep at approximately 11:00 pm she could hear an annoying humming noise but felt no vibrations.

Our Block Captain on Kneeland Avenue in Elmhurst took a ride around the area with his wife at about 11:00 pm on Monday night to see if they could find the source of the problem and found lights on and a lot of noise as construction work was going on at 73rd Place between 51st Avenue and South Railroad Avenue.

We reached out to the Department of Design & Construction (DDC) and they found a permit from the Department of Environmental Protection issued to a contractor to work 24-hours a day for the purpose of installing new sewer connections on 73rd Place/South Railroad Avenue and at the intersection of 73rd Place /51st Avenue, a total of 600 feet. This location falls into Councilman Holden's district and his office is  checking with the agency to see if the contractor is monitoring vibrations.

A big thank you to Howard and his wife for their detective work!!

It's important that you notify someone if something out of the ordinary is going on before the problem escalates. If you're not sure what to do, you can reach out to COMET and "contact us" on our website at www.cometcivic.com.

Sanitation alert for Christmas and New Year's

12/20/2021

Please read carefully because it's different from other years.
NYC Sanitation Provides Trash, Recycling and Curbside Compost Collection Service Updates for Christmas Day and New Year’s Day Holidays
With two back-to-back Saturday holidays, the New York City Department of Sanitation is providing guidance to residents who normally receive Saturday collection.
While many organizations and business may recognize the holidays the Friday before, Friday is a normal collection day for the Department (assuming no snowstorms). Residents with Friday collection should follow their normal schedule.
  • Residents who normally receive Saturday recycling or curbside compost collection may place their material out at curbside between 4 p.m. and midnight on Sunday for collection beginning Monday. Residents may experience collection delays, as is common after holidays. We appreciate patience as we work to collect the backlog of material.
  • Residents who normally receive Saturday trash collection should hold their material until their next trash collection day.
For questions about Sanitation services and holiday schedules contact 311 or visit nyc.gov/sanitation.

110th Precinct Traffic Zoom

12/14/2021

Those of you who attended our last COMET Zoom meeting heard traffic accidents are a big concern for us. The 110th Precinct is doing one (see attached) and we will be following up with the 104th and 108th Precincts to find out when we can have a traffic meeting with them.

This is an opportunity for those of you who live/work in Elmhurst to bring up concerns and maybe some ideas on how to prevent car accidents.
