Hi All,
A community resident called yesterday, Thursday, 7/30, to let me know about a fire that occurred at 85-44 Van Horn Street in Elmhurst. As you can see, there's little left of the building. We contacted the Department of Buildings and I'm sure steps are being taken to secure the property. Here's the concern. I was told that the building has been vacant for quite some time and 311 was called several times. Nothing was done. Since then, folks state that youth have been seen going in and out of the property. We don't know if anyone called 911 about trespassing. If nothing is done let COMET know as soon as possible. We have several vacant buildings in our area and don't want to see another fire. If you see something, say something!! Roe Daraio, President Comet Civic Association www.cometcivic.com Hi All,
See message from Captain Travaglia, 108th Precinct, about a road closure in Woodside/Winfield. Please keep this in mind when driving in the area. This closure is in connection with big sewer project that is ongoing. Roe Daraio, President Comet Civic Association www.cometcivic.com Roe, The 108 Pct has been put on notice of the full street closure of 48th Ave between 69 Street and 70th Street from from July 30, 2015 to September 4, 2015 due to ongoing construction activity (Chambers work). Just a reminder to always be on guard. Scams come in many forms - computer scams are probably high on the list. Don't click on any "popups" - call the company and confirm. Many of us have received calls from someone claiming to be from the "computer department", etc. Hang up, it's a scam!! See below what happened to one of our members. Roe Daraio, President Comet Civic Association www.cometcivic.com Hi Roe I forgot to tell you I fell for a scam on the computer last week.I was reading my emails and there was a photo of Pres. Bush and 22 funny things he said and up popped a message from Microsoft,so I opened it and it said my computer was hacked into and I should call Microsoft. So I called a was told that my computer was hacked into and would be useless and even a new computer wouldn't work because the IP Address was corrupted. The guy said Microsoft wouldn't be doing the repair they contacted United Net Solutions to could fix it for $499 which I paid with my credit card. While they were downloading their applications such as virus and spyware my daughter called and she checked online and this is a common scam among many. So I told them to stop downloading and I want a refund, I also called my credit card company and cancelled the credit card and had to change my email password. So far there hasn't been any charges on my card, I have to check again today but I had to call the real Microsoft and have tech support to remove all the things they installed and it cost me $100. We always hear about scams on the telephone I guess I wasn't expecting a computer scam. See Captain Wachter's update. Great job by NYPD's Narcotics Division!
Keep up the good work - there's still more locations in our area. Roe Daraio, President Comet Civic Association www.cometcivic.com Roe, I am happy to report that last Monday, seven arrests were made by our Narcotics Division for possession of cocaine. All of the persons that were arrested were Maspeth Residents. These arrests addressed some of the locations that residents did submit regarding narcotics activity. Captain Mark Wachter. Calls on Assembly to Pass Companion Legislation to Senator Klein’s Bill Requiring a Public Forum Prior to Shelter Siting
(QUEENS, NY) Tomorrow, Senator Tony Avella and Independent Democratic Conference Leader Jeff Klein will stand with elected officials and community activists to call for the rejection of the Samaritan Village proposal to convert the illegal Pan Am shelter into a permanent shelter. They will urge the Assembly to pass companion legislation to Senator Klein’s bill requiring that a public community forum is held prior to the approval of a shelter site. Samaritan Village had previously proposed a 5-year, $42 million contract with the Department of Homeless Services to become a permanent shelter. The proposal was rejected in May, due to health and safety concerns, including fire code violations and a lack of kitchen facilities in the units. The proposal was resubmitted in June, and the Comptroller's office has until next week to accept or reject the proposal. In addition, the local community was given no notice of the original placement of the shelter at the Pan Am hotel, and only discovered the shelter after it had already opened. The only public hearing was held months after the shelter was in operation. Senator Klein’s bill would require the New York City Planning Commission to hold a public community forum prior to the approval, modification or denial of a shelter site or lease renewal. WHO: Senator Tony Avella, IDC Leader Jeff Klein, Senator Joseph Addabbo, Representative for Assembly Member Francisco Moya, Members of Elmhurst United, and others WHEN: TOMORROW, Tuesday, July 7th, at 11:30 a.m. WHERE: Pan Am Hotel, 79-00 Queens Boulevard, Elmhurst, NY |
