Community Alert - burglary & robbery!

5/31/2014

Hi All,

Captain Timothy Brown, Executive Officer at 104th Precinct, called to alert us about the following crimes that occurred yesterday in Maspeth:
  • A robbery occurred on north east corner of 63rd Street/54th Avenue at about 8:00 pm yesterday, 5/30. It was still light out! An Asian female senior was robbed by two male Hispanics wearing masks. One displayed a silver gun. They stole her Samsung Galaxy and other items including a Korean bible.  She was not injured. The perpetrators fled northbound on 63rd Street. The 104th responded as well as a helicopter but the canvas met with no success.
  • A burglary occurred on 52nd/66th Street near the dead-end trail at about 10:30 am yesterday, 5/30. The perpetrator forcibly broke into the rear door and stole money and jewelry. The victims were Asian. Neighbors say to keep an eye out for a white Cherokee jeep, 2002-2004 with a dent on the passenger side. This vehicle may or may not be involved. If you see it, get license plate number and call it in to the 104th Detective Squad so they can look into it.
As usual, keep your eyes and ears open. If you have Asian neighbors it's extremely important that you let them know what's going on. If you see anything suspicious call 911.

COMET meeting Monday 6/2

5/30/2014

Hi All,

Our last Comet meeting before summer will be held this Monday, June 2nd. Please see our website for location, etc. We have a lot to cover so please be on time - or early!!

  • We met some folks from Elmhurst who attended our meeting for the first time last month. They had a lot of questions about community driveways and we didn't have an answer. I am pleased to let you know that Kenneth Lazar from the Department of Buildings willattend and answer questions concerning property issues such as parking, use and who is responsible for maintaining community driveways, illegal construction, failure to maintain property, etc. This is your opportunity to get answers!!
  • As usual, the 104th, 108th and 110th Precincts will give us our crime statistics and let us know what initiatives have been done in our area during the past 28 days.
  • Spoke with Detective Toro at the New Immigrant Outreach Unit about what can be done on an ongoing basis to alert non-English speaking Asians about what's going on. Too many of these residents are being singled out and targeted. Not optimistic on such short notice, but maybe we'll hear some good news on Monday. She said she'll try to attend.
  • Councilman Dromm's office has been looking into abandoned house on 83rd Street. I asked how long will an abandoned house remain in that state before it's sold. They are looking into it and will hopefully have an answer on Monday.
  • Council Member Crowley's office will let us know what progress is being made with 311 with regard to reporting bridges and streets and presently not in their system. This isn't a problem that's solved overnight, but let's hope we get some good news.

104th Precinct crime report

5/29/2014

Hi All,

Heard from Captain Manson, 104th Precinct, who said we had three crimes in our area:
  • Sunday, 5/25, a truck was burglarized on 73rd Street/53rd Avenue between the hours of 6:00 pm and 9:00 am. An Apple Mac and multiple checks amounting to about $6,000 was stolen from glove compartment. (NOTE: commercial vehicles cannot park on residential streets between the hours of 9:00 pm and 5:00 am. Complaints can be called into 311.)
  • Monday, 5/26, 71st Street/Grand Avenue, between hours of 11:30 pm and 7:30 am, unknown person(s) entered through rear door and stole two lap tops and two cell phones from vacant bedroom while residents were sleeping.
  • Monday, 5/26, 63rd Street/Borden Avenue, a 2005 Lincoln Navigator was stolen between the hours of 8:00 pm and 10:00 pm. (NOTE: some vehicles are stolen for parts. It might be worthwhile to call the Crime Prevention Officer at your precinct and make an appointment to have your vehicle VIN Etched free of charge. This will deter car thieves because they can't sell a part with VIN # etched on it. If you have theft insurance, you might be eligible for a discount  from your insurance company too.)
Not yet confirmed by 108th Precinct:

Heard from our VP who states a motorcycle was stolen out of a driveway on 72nd Street off Calamus Avenue at about 1:30 am yesterday. It was parked behind car in driveway.

Please stay alert and report anything suspicious to 911 immediately!!

Community alert - Elmhurst burglary

5/26/2014

Hi All,

DI Leyson, 110th Precinct, wants us to know that a burglary occurred at 78 #s on Kneeland Avenue on Thursday, 5/22, between the hours of 8:50 am and 9:00 pm. Someone forced open (kicked in or pried forcefully) the front door and removed a camera.

If you recall, Captain Manson, 104th Precinct, told us a burglary occurred on the same day as this one, 5/22, at 51 #'s on 69th Place between the hours of 11:00 am and 12:40 pm. Entry was made into the Woodside home, which is not far from Elmhurst, through the front door - just like this one in Elmhurst!

DI Leyson wants EVERYONE to keep their eyes and ears open and call 911 for any suspicious persons or vehicles.

Don't forget, burglars move around to avoid detection. Anyone could become a victim!!

Community alert - burglary and stolen car!

5/23/2014

Hi All,

Captain Manson, 104th Precinct, called to alert us to the fact that we had a burglary and a car stolen in Maspeth.
  • Today, Thursday, 5/22, the home of an Asian family at 51 #s and 69th Place in Woodside was broken into between the hours of 11:00 am and 12:40 pm. Entry was made through the front door. $3,000 cash, headphones and other small items were stolen.
  • Sometime between 5/17 and today, a resident discovered his 2010 Jeep Patriot was stolen from 53 #'s on 68th Street.
With the long weekend just around corner and many folks going away, it is important that those of us who are home be alert and call 911 if anyone suspicious is seen lurking around. This burglary occurred right on the 108th Precinct border and not far from Elmhurst in the 110th.

The Crime Prevention Officers at our precincts will come to your home to conduct a free safety survey at your convenience. He/she will give you inexpensive tips on how to protect your home. Call your precinct and ask to speak to him/her if you're interested.

Have a safe holiday weekend and please join us and march on Sunday if you're home.

Community alert - attempted deception burglary!

5/9/2014

Hi All,

Captain Manson, 104th Precinct, called to let us know that a 76-year old female who lives at 67 #'s on 53rd Drive in Maspeth was the target of a deception burglary yesterday, 5/8, at approximately 4:00 pm.

The woman was approached by three males, possibly Hispanic, who told her they were there to repair a broken pipe. The woman went to the basement with one of the males. She heard a noise, went upstairs and caught one of the males coming out of her bedroom. The males fled without taking any property.

Captain Manson said he cannot provide any further details at this time. He wants to stress to everyone - do not let anyone in your home under any circumstances if you didn't call them. If the person is persistent, tell him to wait outside until you call the utility company or police to verify they are legitimate.

Con artists use many different tactics. They can say they are roofers, contractors or gardeners, etc. If you didn't call them, don't fall for the scam.

I know you have all heard this before and know better. However, it's very important that you pass on this information to your neighbors, especially seniors, who are oftentimes targeted by these perpetrators.

Have a nice weekend and Happy Mother's Day!

Community alert - mail theft

5/8/2014

Hi All,

Yesterday, 5/7, a Maspeth resident discovered all their mail was stolen from their mailbox. The discovery was made by coincidence. One neighbor saw the mailman deliver it at about noon and someone else saw it in the mailbox at 3:45 pm. At approximately 5:00 pm when the neighbor arrived home, the mail was gone. The resident reported the theft to the US Postal Service and was told they would get back with a report in two business days.

What is really disturbing is the fact this could be going on every day. If someone is at work or shopping and the mail is stolen they might think they just didn't get any mail that day. It's hard to know what goes on in the minds of thieves but identity theft or stealing checks comes to mind.
  • If you are home during the day, make sure you get your mail as soon as possible. A thief may be walking around during the afternoon to see if mail is in the box and makes the assumption the person is at work. steals it, and knows the victim is no wiser.
  • If you have a small mailbox consider upgrading to a bigger one so overflowing mail isn't visible to someone on the street.
  • Stealing mail is a Federal offense! If you see anyone tampering with someone's mail, call 911 immediately. Give a description of the person, direction he/she went and any vehicle they may have gotten into. The NYPD will detain the perpetrator for the Postal Police. You will not get into trouble if you are mistaken.
  • If you are a victim of mail theft, call 311 and they will give you the number for the Postal Service. The NYPD does not take reports for mail thefts.
Please be alert at all times - crime happens everywhere!!
