Community Alert - arrest and assault/robbery

7/29/2013

Hi All,

Want you to hear the good news before the bad.  Captain Hennessy, 108th Precinct, said they just made an arrest for GLA (stolen car) on Garfield Avenue at 69th Street!  Kudos to the 108th!!

Here's the bad news.  Captain Manson, 104th Precinct, called to say that at 3:30 am this morning, 7/29, at 69th Street/Grand Avenue, a female Hispanic was robbed by a male white, about 25 years old, 5'9" tall.  He punched her in the face, stole her cell phone and purse and fled.  After removing the cash from her purse, he dropped it.

Please be aware of your surroundings.  This can happen at any time, anywhere.  Don't carry anything important that you don't need.  And please, keep your cell phones out of sight!

Please stay alert

7/29/2013

Hi All,

Some of you might have heard that Middle Village has had a string of burglaries.  Some of these burglaries occurred during early morning hours when folks were sleeping.

If you don't live in Middle Village, you live close by.  If the NYPD steps up patrols in one neighborhood, the burglars just move to another one and we're right next door.

Let's ACT, not REACT!  We need act and secure our home before a burglar strikes rather than having to react after the crime happens.

  • Burglars are looking for an easy entry.  Make sure all doors and windows are locked and keep lights on outside, especially at the rear of your home.
  • Don't leave patio furniture near a window.  It can be used to gain entry into a window.
  • Look out your windows often. If you have a community drive, check to make sure no suspicious vehicles are parked there.  If something doesn't seem right, it probably isn't.  Call 911. Provide as much info as possible, i.e. the make/model/plate number of the vehicle.
  • Don't let shrubs obscure your windows!
  • Leave on a light at night so burglars think you're awake.
  • You can call your local precinct and ask to speak to your Crime Prevention Officer.  He or she will visit your home and give you cost-effective tips on home to secure your home.  These home security surveys are free of charge.

Community Alert - More burglaries!

7/27/2013

Hi All,

Please be on lookout and call 911 if you see any suspicious characters lurking around!!

  • Captain Hennessy, 108th Precinct, said: We have had rash of burgs in Cometland area, all commercial. M/B broke into auto repair 70/Garfield, and tried to steal tow truck in lot next door. Also have break in commercial store 61/Laurel Hill Blvd with tools removed.
  • DI Leyson, 110th Precinct, has confirmed this robbery is part of citywide pattern:  On Thursday, 7/25, the Dhaka mini Mart 85-42 Grand Avenue was robbed by 2 male Hispanics who displayed firearms and took currency then fled scene. No injuries, no shots fired.

Community Alert - Commercial Burglary

7/26/2013

Hi All,

DI Leyson, 110th Precinct, advised us that Dhaka Mini Mart, 85-42 Grand Avenue in Elmhurst, was robbed this afternoon about 5:00 - 5:15 pm.  Two male Hispanics displayed firearms and took money then fled scene. No injuries and no shots fired. Detectives are on the scene and investigating.

It's surprising robbers targeted this location on Grand Avenue - it's very busy with pedestrian and vehicular traffic!  If you know any of the storeowners on Grand Avenue, 69th Street, Queens Boulevard or surrounding area, please tell them to be on the alert.  Oftentimes robbers "case" a location before commiting the crime.  If they, or you, see anything suspicious call 911!

Community Alert - Burglary in Elmhurst

7/22/2013

Hi All,

DI Leyson, 110th Precinct, states that a burglary was reported on Saturday, 7/20. The burglary occurred on the 8700 block of 58th Avenue in Elmhurst between 3:30 pm on Friday to 1:30 am Saturday. Entry was made by forcibly opening the front door. Property stolen included computers, cash and jewelry.

DI Leyson asks that everyone remain vigilant and if they see something, say something. Call 911!

Please pass this on to friends and family in our area.

Community alert - commercial burglary

7/17/2013

Hi All,

We had a commercial burglary, 65 #'s on Grand Avenue.  Cash, checks and a laptop was stolen.  Perpetrator entered through side of building by pushing in the air conditioner.

Captain Travaglia, 104th Precinct, said there have been burglaries in Middle Village and entry to the homes was made by pushing in the air conditioners.  The 104th is patroling the area.  He wants to stress the importance of securing your air conditioner so a perpetrator cannot gain entry into your home.

Please pass this message along to friends/family. Stay alert!!  Remember, if it's happening there - it can happen anywhere!  Call 911 if you see anything suspicious.

Community Alert - attempted burglary

7/15/2013

Hi All,

Last night, Sunday, 7/14, approximately 7:15 pm, female spotted a male in her front yard at 58 #'s on 59th Street in Maspeth.  When she confronted him, he said he was collecting bottles.  Believe it or not, female gave him bottles!

Male went to adjacent yard, hopped fence into another yard, threw bottles female gave him in a dumpster and broke rear door's glass window.  He injured his leg when fleeing the scene and headed up Grand Avenue. 104th responded - investigation ongoing.  Perpetrator is described as a male white, possibly Polish.

PLEASE call 911 if a stranger enters your property!  The person, just like in this case, might be a burglar - not a bottle collector!!  Please pass this on to others in the community and ask them to be on the lookout.

Rims/Tire Theft on Grand Avenue

7/11/2013

Hi All,

DI Leyson, 110th Precinct, said all four rims/tires were stolen off a 2012 Toyota Camry this past weekend after 1:00 am in front of 84-54 Grand Avenue in Elmhurst.  This is not far from the prior rim/tire incident we had not too long ago.

If you recall, the last time this happened in Elmhurst, Maspeth and Woodside also had rims/tires stolen.  Folks have been keeping air conditioners on in this hot, humid weather and it's less likely anyone will hear anything.  Please look out your window if you get up during the night and call 911 if you see anything suspicious.
