Sanitation and the snow

1/23/2016

Hi All,

I received a few calls from folks asking if they should place their trash/recycling out Saturday for pickup. I called DSNY Queens West 5 and was told the only notifications they are getting is regarding the upcoming storm and snow removal. Here's what I was told:
  • DSNY will pickup trash but when snow begins to accumulate they will switch over to snow removal.
  • It's suggested that folks put out their trash but don't let it get buried under the snow. Sanitation will make pickups after snow is cleared.
  • Folks should watch updates on the news regarding pickups or go to DSNY's website to see when pickups will resume.
Sorry, but that's the best I could do.

Another Maspeth car break-in

1/13/2016

Hi All,

See info below provided by Captain Wachter, 104th Precinct.

The resident on Maspeth Avenue said the perpetrator must have used a "jimmy" to get into the vehicle. I sent you an email about two car break-ins that occurred on Saturday night. That resident states she had damage to her window where the must have used the jimmy to open the car door.

Residents believe there was a third car break-in which hasn't been reported. The neighbor will ask car owner to report. It's very important that the NYPD knows where crime is occurring!!

If you get up during the night, PLEASE look out your window!!

Roe,

There were two car break-ins in Maspeth overnight. The first one was at 59-xx Maspeth Avenue. The person reports that the rain guard was damaged and no property taken. The second one was at 59-xx 57 Drive. They removed change and a E-cigarette. The second break-in stated that they didn't lock their doors. Please remind residents to lock their doors and park vehicles in well lit areas.

Residential burglary in West Maspeth Sunday

1/12/2016

Hi All,

See message below from Captain Mackie, Executive Officer of the 104th Precinct. If anyone saw or heard anything, please call the 104th Precinct Squad.

60-xx 55th Street, 2nd Floor apartment, midday Sunday.  Complainant states he left his door locked and left home. Upon return later this afternoon he discovered front door was unlocked, closet in common family room was gone through, $2,000 removed.  Point of entry is unknown.

PLEASE remind residents NOT to leave large sums of cash inside the home, anywhere.  Thieves know all the traditional hiding places.  Large sums of cash are BEST kept deposited in the bank.  If the cash must be left in the home it should be kept in a locked safe, they go for about $100-$200 depending on size but they are a wise investment, and should be bolted from the inside to a permanent structure (i.e. a wall frame stud or a floor joist) to prevent theft of the safe.  Same goes for Jewelry, all jewelry should be stored in a safe that is always secured.  Lastly, try to make it a habit of doubling yourself to make sure your doors are locked prior to leaving the house.

Be safe.

Maspeth car breakins over weekend

1/12/2016

Hi All,

Car break-in thieves hit two vehicles in Maspeth. See message below from Captain Mackie, Executive Officer at 104th Precinct. Please heed his advice!!!

Roe Daraio, President
Comet Civic Association
www.cometcivic.com,

2  auto breaks in Cometland, overnight Fri into Sat.

56-xx 59 St, owner claims that vehicle was locked but no signs of forced entry, no broken glass, passenger compartment tossed, $10 taken.

56-xx 59 St, no damage or forced entry, no broken glass, $50 removed from vehicle.

The common thread here is property/money left in‎side the vehicle, DON'T leave ANYTHING inside your vehicle of value, it is just not worth it, and make sure ALL the doors are locked, the easiest way inside your car for a thief is through an unlocked door, and they will try all the handles until they find one that is unlocked.

Car breakins - Elmhurst

1/12/2016

Hi All,

DI Manson, 110th Precinct, confirmed that two vehicles were broken into Thursday night/Friday morning in the vicinity of Haspel Street and 52nd Avenue. The windows of both vehicles were broken. The first car had a wallet with credit cards stolen. The second car had an iPod, and expensive sunglasses stolen.

The 110th Precinct Squad is looking into these cases and extra patrols by Anti Crime teams have been put into place.

Just because our communities have seen a decrease in crime doesn't mean crime can go back up. Please don't leave anything in your vehicles and make sure the doors are locked!! And remember, if it can happen on 52nd Avenue it can happen anywhere!

Stay alert and if you see something, say something!!

Rise in residential burglaries

1/6/2016

Hi All,

Please see the message below from Captain Mackie, Executive Officer at 104th Precinct, concerning a recent burglary. He also recapped burglaries in our area during December.

You can call your local precinct and schedule a safety survey with your Crime Prevention Officer.

Stay alert and call 911 if you see something suspicious - most burglaries occur during the day!!!

Hi Roe...hope you had a fantabulous Christmas and New Year!!

On Monday 1/4 there was a residential burglary at ‎ 54-xx 66th Street‎. The victims went out to dinner in Flushing in the early evening. When they returned later in the night, they discovered the 2nd floor bedroom ransacked and $3,000 missing from a dresser drawer. The 2nd floor window used to gain entry had a previously broken lock, which basically allowed the perp to walk right on in. Additionally the home had cameras but they were NOT recording.

We have seen a rise in residential burgs in the area.‎ PLEASE warn everyone to not keep large amounts of cash in the home, it's always safer in the bank, if they have a surveillance system, the cameras are useless unless they are actively recording, and windows are a common entry point (even those above ground level), ALWAYS keep them locked and if they are broken please make sure they get fixed immediately!

If anyone is in need of a Crime Prevention survey of their home, Officers Hyatt and Collado are always available to perform these surveys, free of charge.

-Capt Mac

Molotov cocktail thrown at Maspeth store

1/4/2016

Hi All,

For those of you who heard about a Molotov cocktail being thrown at a Maspeth store on the news today, here is an update from Captain Wachter, 104th Precinct.

At 12:15 am a male was seen on video breaking the glass on a door of a business that sells birdseed located 73-15 Grand Avenue. The owner was on the premises and was able to quickly extinguish the fire. The FDNY Arson Unit is currently investigating the incident.

Captain Wachter said this has nothing to do with the incident involving the City Scapes gentlemen's club on 58th Street in Woodside and is most likely a result of a dispute.

If you have any information about this incident, please call the Bureau of Fire Investigation at 718-722-3600.
