SE859: 70th Street Sewer Upgrade Advisory

9/27/2019

Hi All,

Attached you will find the weekly sewer upgrade advisory.

We're all aware of the sewer work but what I didn't realize, until now, is that the project also entails replacing old water mains within the scope of the project - 69th Street from Queens Boulevard to 48th Avenue; 69th Street and 51st Avenue along 70th Street to the Long Island Expressway. This came to my attention when I asked a worker why "no parking" signs were being posted on 70th Street between 52nd Drive and 53rd Avenue where I live. The worker told me they will be "cutting the street" but will not be opening it up until they put in a temporary water main. i was curious why they said residents would get a 72-hour advance advisory for water interruptions for the sewer project. Now I realize it's because they will also be working on our water mains!

There is some information that I think folks need to know.

Construction Mitigation:
  • Water main work (20", 12" and 8" diameter water mains (reconstruction of approximately 4000 linear feet)
  • Weekend or night work near a school as needed as permitted by NYC DOT
  • Night work at Grand Avenue (commercial coordinator) as permitted by NYC DOT
  • Other areas - daytime or as needed (with community consultation)
Mitigation: (Individuals with special needs should contact the Community Construction Liaison CCL) to minimize inconveniences. Her contact info is on the attached advisory)
  • Curbside, driveway, and parking will be temporarily restricted during construction.
  • Express, private and/or local bus stops will be temporarily relocated/rerouted.
  • Anticipated merchant deliveries will be coordinated.
  • Garbage/trash pick-up may be affected - will be coordinated with community, DSNY and BIC.
  • Pre-construction photos will be taken outside of homes.
  • Rodent mitigation is included in the contract.
  • Tree pruning will be performed prior to the start of major work.
  • Engagement with NYPD, FDNY and all relevant agencies.
  • Storage areas determined through NYC DOT.
We'll try to stay on top of this project as best we can, but any way you look at it - it's going to be a nightmare.

Important Sewer Project meeting 9/10

9/8/2019

Hi All,

See the attached flier with regard to an upcoming meeting with the Department of Design & Construction (DDC) this Tuesday, September 10th, 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm in IS 73 auditorium, 54th Avenue at 70th Street. Councilman Holden and Assemblyman Barnwell will be present.

The flier states Calamus Avenue and 70th Street sewer project but keep in mind the project also includes a portion of 54th Avenue, 71st Street to Grand Avenue, Grand Avenue to Mazeau Street and the entire length of Mazeau Street.

I urge anyone living on these streets or living near to the intersection of these streets to attend. We don't know where materials and equipment will be stored and it's important we all have a chance to ask questions including how to file claims for damages, if need be. I urge everyone to take pictures of their property prior to the start of this project.

I don't know if individual homes will be getting the notification so please pass the word. COMET will have someone to help translate for Mandarin-speaking residents since I'm not sure if the agency will provide a translator.
