Maspeth Robbery + Power Outages

Hi All,

Yesterday, Saturday, July 20th, approximately 2:30 pm, a female on her way home from the laundromat on 57th Avenue at Mazeau Street in Maspeth was struck from behind as she was walking on Mazeau Street by the alley. She hit her head as she fell to the pavement. The perpetrators are described as male and female whites. The female did the robbery. A cell phone and credit cards were stolen.

Please try not to use your cell phone in public and be alert at all times. This incident occurred in mid-afternoon most likely because it was hot and no one was around. It was a crime of opportunity.
The detectives are currently investigating the incident.

I've heard there have been car break-ins in Middle Village. Please be sure to lock your doors, even if you park in your driveway, and don't leave valuables inside the vehicle.

If anyone has any information regarding the above, please reach out to the 104th Precinct Detective Squad.

Lastly, I've been getting reports from folks that lights have been flickering and customers scattered around our area are without electric. Please use your electric appliances sparingly during this heatwave.

Rat Academy Training

Hi All,

Just a reminder to let you know that thanks to Councilman Dromm, free Rat Academy Training will be taking place next Thursday, July 25th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. See attached.

Like it or not, every community has a rat problem and learning ways to address the problem is crucial.

The Q58 bus will take you St.James Episcopal Church where the event is being held.

Robbery alert!

Hi All,

Captain Ventre, Commanding Officer at the 110th Precinct, asked us to blast out this alert. See attached. Please be aware of your surroundings at all times, especially at night. Please don't carry credit cards, other info such as Social Security card, or cash that is unnecessary. If anyone has any info please contact the NYPD.

On another note, the Newtown Civic Association reached out to tell us that bike lanes were installed on Grand Avenue in Elmhurst and they're working on them along Broadway. Be careful when you drive.

Con Ed work in preparation for sewer work

Hi All,

Residents on 70th Street between 52nd Drive and 70th Street have noticed that Con Ed is "reserving" parking spaces with barriers and has a security person sitting in a vehicle 24/7 making sure the spots are reserved even though work isn't being done. This is possibly being done in other areas as well. The response Assemblyman Barnwell got from Con Ed (see below) doesn't answer the parking question but this does serve as a reminder about the mega sewer project that will soon be impacting folks not only on Calamus Avenue, 70th Street, a portion of Grand Avenue but also Mazeau Street.

The offices of Assemblyman Barnwell and Councilman Holden are working to set up the briefing prior to the start of this project. No date has been set yet.

This response mentions making way for large cranes and this is a cause for concern because they may rip branches from the trees that line our streets. This is just one issue I hope to raise at the community briefing.

Your office was very familiar with Phase I of the Calamus Avenue water/sewer project in this area of Maspeth/Woodside. Phase I is now complete. The activity your constituent observed is in preparation for Phase II of this project. We are in the process of relocating some of our electric equipment in preparation for the new sewer/water main/catch basins. This also assists in making way for large cranes that need to traverse those narrow streets. This is a city project in which (as is the case with other large infrastructure projects) Con Edison and other utilities are asked to relocate equipment in advance of the city's work. That is the case here. I would suggest that you reach out to the DDC to get a sense of the overall scope of the work and schedule.

I am working on getting additional information with relation to our involvement moving forward."
