Subject: Community Alert ! Green Dot MoneyPak Card Scam

Community Alert!!!

Green Dot Money Scam

Over the last few days the 104 Precinct has taken multiple reports from residents who have received phone calls from individuals (con men) claiming to be from Con Edison and are threatened with service disruptions if they do not send funds immediately via the Green Dot MoneyPak. Unfortunately these residents provided the information these criminals requested.

DO NOT BECOME A VICTIM!!

This scam is not only limited to Utility Companies, the unsolicited calls could also be from anyone demanding immediate payment (example: I.R.S.)

Here are a few tips to remember:
  • Be suspicious of any individual who calls you at home unsolicited and demands immediate payment. This is also true of unsolicited emails. (Utility Companies and Government Agencies will not contact you demanding immediate payment via Green Dot MoneyPak cards)
  • Never wire money, provide credit card, debit card or Green Dot Moneypak numbers to anyone you do not know. Doing so allows access to the all available funds on said cards.
I have enclosed for your review a more detailed briefing describing how this scam may work. This scam is 100% preventable.

DSNY pickups resume

1/23/2014

Hi All,
I spoke with DSNY Queens West 5 and they said trash pickups resumed today. She said if your usual trash pickup was on Wednesday, put it out tomorrow night for Saturday pickup.

As for recyclables, she said at this time they're going day-to-day and as of today were told to only pick up trash - not sure when recyclable pickup will resume.

She said if your recyclable pickup is slated for Saturday, put it out and they may pick it up.

For those of us who didn't get a recyclable pickup this past Wednesday, she said we should hold it for next Wednesday.

FYI - DSNY trash/snow removal

1/21/2014

Hi All,

Heard announcement from DSNY commissioner:
  • Trash/recycling pickups have been suspended. If you have trash at the curb for pickup today he said you can leave it there. If you have not placed your trash/recycling out yet, leave it on your property. He will let folks know when pickups resume.
  • He said salt is not effective in very cold weather and you need to be extremely cautious when driving. The snow will be fluffy and can easily blow back into the street.
I reached out to the offices of Council Members Crowley and Dromm to see if they can insure the following locations are salted/sanded or shoveled.
  • 53rd Avenue between 69th Street and 65th Place. Q 18 circumvents Plateau heading in both directions because of dangerous conditions when it's snowy or icy. (CB 5)
  • Jay Avenue between 68th Street 65th Place - route for Q18. (CB 5)
  • 50th Avenue between 69th Street and 65th Place - route for Q18.(CB 2)
  • 53rd Drive between 65th Place and Maurice Avenue - Q 67 route. (CB 5)
  • LIE overpass on Grand Avenue between Borden and Queens Midtown Expressway (east and westbound service roads). Not usually salted unless requested.  (CB 5)
  • Step street at 65th Place. (CB 5)
  • Railroad overpass on Grand Avenue at Calamus Avenue. Heavily used by pedestrians and not usually salted unless requested. (CB 4)
  • Footbridge at 55th Avenue between Haspel and 85th Street. NYC DOT maintains this bridge. Can't call it into 311 because they only take bridges/pedestrian overpasses with names. (CB 4)
  • 79th Street between Grand and Calamus Avenues - route for Q47 bus. (CB 4)

Please be safe and don't overdo it when shoveling!!

Pedestrian killed at 69th Place and Grand Ave

1/18/2014

Hi All,

Received word from several folks telling me a woman was hit by a vehicle making an ILLEGAL left turn onto Grand Avenue at 69th Place at about 12-12:30 pm this afternoon.

Captain Manson, 104th Precinct, said the driver is under arrest for a suspended license. He said the woman has died.

I reached out to Council Member Crowley's staffer to let him know about the accident and that we plan to start a committee to address this and other traffic issues. We've put in proposals throughout our civic area but need to put pressure on to get the dangerous conditions addressed!!

If anyone is interested in volunteering for the committee, please let me know. I'll reach out to Maspeth Town Hall and ask Eileen Reilly if perhaps we can meet there. Will keep everyone updated.

Rim/tire jobs and bank robbery in Maspeth

1/15/2014

Hi All,
Captain Manson, 104th Precinct, said we had two rim/tire jobs. The two locations vehicles were parked are 58 #'s on 75th Street and 61-16 Maspeth Avenue. The second location is St. Stan's church. Comet member heard victim was a priest (not confirmed).

From past tire/rim jobs I seem to remember they come in clusters - a couple in Maspeth/Middle Village, a couple in Woodside and Elmhurst. These crooks are fast and quiet. If you're out and about during early morning hours, keep a look out. If you get up during the night, look out your window and don't hesitate to call 911 if you see anything!!

Yesterday, the Chase Bank at 66th Street and Grand Avenue was robbed, but the robber was caught almost immediately.

Roe,

Last night (early this morning) we had two gunpoint robberies.  The first was at 0235 across Queens Blvd at 56 Ave and 90 St where two male Black approximately 20 years old approached a woman and ordered her at gunpoint into their car and robbed her of her belongings.  They then ordered her out of the car and fled.

The car is described as a four door Black Honda Accord or Civic.

The second happened about and hour later at 0345 at Grand Ave and Seabury St.  A woman saw that a male black approximately 30 years old wearing a Blue Hooded Jacket following her as a Black four door Honda drove slowly by.  She was robbed of her property and pushed to the ground sustaining minor injuries.  The male fled towards the car and out of sight.

Please have everyone be mindful of their surroundings and if they feel uncomfortable or like they are being followed, go to a well lit area or into a store for assistance.  Call the police and let us investigate.  If they see a suspicious car, call 911!!

Community alert - attempted burglary

1/9/2014

Hi All,
Captain Manson, 104th Precinct, called today to alert us to an attempted burglary at 57 #'s on Mazeau Street, yesterday Wednesday, 1/8.

At approximately 3:10-3:25 pm a young man spotted two males attempting to open a window at a residential house.  He told his mother who immediately called 911.  The suspects left the scene through a rear gate.

Captain Manson wants to remind everyone to keep an eye out and if you see something to call 911!!

PO David Saponieri, Community Affairs 110th Precinct, said he will be bringing graffiti removal request forms to our February 3rd meeting.  If anyone has any location where graffiti needs to be removed, ask the property owner if he's interested and you can drop off the form to be completed.  PO Saponieri said he will pass the signed requests along so the locations can be cleaned when the weather gets warmer.
