60-xx 55th Street, 2nd Floor apartment, midday Sunday. Complainant states he left his door locked and left home. Upon return later this afternoon he discovered front door was unlocked, closet in common family room was gone through, $2,000 removed. Point of entry is unknown.
PLEASE remind residents NOT to leave large sums of cash inside the home, anywhere. Thieves know all the traditional hiding places. Large sums of cash are BEST kept deposited in the bank. If the cash must be left in the home it should be kept in a locked safe, they go for about $100-$200 depending on size but they are a wise investment, and should be bolted from the inside to a permanent structure (i.e. a wall frame stud or a floor joist) to prevent theft of the safe. Same goes for Jewelry, all jewelry should be stored in a safe that is always secured. Lastly, try to make it a habit of doubling yourself to make sure your doors are locked prior to leaving the house.
Be safe.
