Over the past couple of weeks Comet has been getting complaints about rat sightings, even during the day, in the vicinity of 74th Street/53rd Road.  I have now been told that the emotionally disturbed man, who a couple of years ago built a huge house made of trash behind Stop & Shop on the railroad tracks, is now living behind the old Blockbuster site and is allegedly feeding the rats!  I heard this from more than one person.
  • I've emailed Council Member Crowley's office and asked that they reach out to the Health Department bait the area as soon as possible.  I also asked that they get someone to come and evaluate the homeless man.  The 104th Precinct was also notified about the individual.
  • Several folks on 70th Street have had mice in their house.  This is probably a result of the wet weather we've had for the past couple of weeks.  It's doubtful that 70th Street is the only block with the problem!
  • Mice and rats carry diseases.  They are all over - not just in northern Maspeth - or contained to one block.  Please put down traps - away from children and pets.  Just because you don't see them doesn't mean they're not around!
  • When walking in the vicinity of 74th Street, please be alert.
  • If I get any updates, I'll let you know.

CB5 sent out the following notification relating to road work in our area.
  • Monday, 7/11 - Night work - Grand Ave, LIE to 74th Street - milling
  • Tuesday, 7/12 - Night work - Grand Ave, LIE to 74th Street - milling
  • Wednesday, 7/13 - Night work - Grand Ave, Haspel to 74th Street - milling
  • Thursday, 7/14 - Night work - Grand Ave, Haspel to 74th Street - milling
  • Friday, 7/15 - Night work - Queens Blvd, Woodhaven to Bway/Grand Ave - milling
No information was given as to what time the work will start or end each night.  I assume one half the street will be done one day, and the other side the next day.  Folks who live near the work area can expect dust and noise.  I strongly suggest you put down glue traps - or whatever - in case rodent nesting areas are disturbed by the vibrations.  (Ugh!)  The work will be delayed if there is inclement weather.  I don't know when the paving will be done but there's usually a delay between the milling and paving.  Expect possible delays in travel time during the work hours. I'll keep you updated if I hear anything more.
