PO Berish, 104th Community Affairs, confirmed that there was an attempted robbery in Maspeth yesterday. A female, about 60-years of age, was walking past 64 #s on 65th Place when a male attempted to rip a chain from her neck. He did not get the chain but she suffered a minor injury to the neck. The perpetrator fled and jumped on a motorcycle with another male. The perpetrator(s) are described as male blacks, about 21-years of age and one weighing about 150 lbs. The report was taken at 5:02 pm.
(If you're wearing an expensive necklace, don't leave it visible when walking in the neighborhood. It's a shame that we have to live on the defensive even in broad daylight. I also strongly suggest you don't carry anything in your purse that you don't want to lose. I'm surprised the perpetrator didn't try to steal her purse if she was carrying one.)
Someone reached out to me about 3 "muggings" that occurred yesterday in Maspeth. Supposedly two on the Plateau. PO Berish said the above incident was the only reported incident there. I happened to be listening to the police radio yesterday afternoon when the job came over. The call was made in the vicinity of Hamilton Place but the incident actually occurred at the above location. This might account for the confusion.
The second incident, which occurred at 73 #s on Grand Avenue was not a "mugging". It was an assault. Apparently a white female was exiting a cab when an Asian male, not known to the victim, punched her in the face. The 104th Precinct responded, did a canvas and arrested the male for Third Degree Assault at approximately 9:15 am.
