In case some of you need clarification about the Department of Sanitation's trash containerization requirements for residential homes, which will take effect in the fall of 2024, we reached out and got this response below. We don't want folks purchasing pails in advance that don't fit the requirements.
The Adams Administration is committed to getting trash bags off the street, bringing New York City in line with other global leaders that have moved their waste into containers. Between the commercial containerization effort and sweeping new residential rules, 70% of the city’s trash is headed into containers. By moving the black bags off the streets and into sealed, rodent-proof receptacles, we are reclaiming public spaces, cutting off the 24-hour rat buffet, and improving quality of life for all New Yorkers.

The new containerization rules are not affected by the budget cuts.

- ALL Businesses will still be required to containerize their trash beginning March 2024
- ALL residential buildings with 1-9 units will still be required to containerize their trash beginning in the Fall of 2024.
