A concerned Maspeth neighbor sent us two important pieces of info. Please pass this along, especially to seniors and those who don't have email because they seem to be the targets!! If someone even tries to gain entry into your house with a ploy like this, call 911. The NYPD might be able to catch up with the the individual. If he turns out to be a perpetrator, he could be arrested! This is near the Maspeth/Woodside/Elmhurst border and your area could be next!!

Sat. 12/15/12, appx. 11:00am:
My next-door neighbor (54-xx 72 ST) overhead a man on the front steps of house 2 doors from her, speaking w. homeowner 54-xx 72 ST, trying to gain access to the premises.
She heard him tell the woman he was from the "power authority" & that there had been an explosion on Grand Ave., asked her if she'd heard it, & that he needed to check every house to make sure their lights were working.
She saw the woman was going to let him in, so she stepped in, asking him to see his work order, etc., & basically scared him off. She said he walked down 72 ST towards 53 Ave. Witness called 911, telling them the woman was an elderly recluse, & described the man as short, stocky, Hispanic or light-skinned African-American, w. a goatee

FYI -
As I'm signed up for auto paments w, NYC DEP, my payment was due 10/26/12, so I checked my bank statements - no record.
Called DEP - 718-595-7000 - was told there was a glitch in the system in September, & some auto payments were not made. (I thought it was because of the hurricane.)
I was told they'll remove the late charges, & I have a choice of either paying what's due now, or wait until the next payment is due in 1/13, & they'll then deduct both payments at that time.
FYI - if anyone is signed up for auto pay w. NYC - check your statements, & call DEP if the transaction wasn't made & get them to remove the late payment!
