PO Youssef, Community Affairs from the 108th Precinct provided us with our crime stats for the past 28 days. There's good and bad news. Folks who live on the Maspeth/Woodside/Elmhurst border need to be aware. I should have the stats for Maspeth and south Elmhurst by the beginning of next week. 0 murders; 0 rapes; 4 robberies; 1 felony assault (husband/wife); 1 car theft (GLA); 3 grand larcenies. One incident was a bike that was chained on Calamus Ave/72nd St and was stolen on 6/26 at noontime. Robberies
Hi Everyone,
I promised to update you if there is anything you need to be aware of in the Maspeth area. Not surprisingly, we're having a car theft problem (GLAs) on the border with the 108th Precinct. In order for you to see a clear pattern between the two communities, I'm listing the locations in Maspeth that were just given to me by the 104th and below that the GLAs in the Woodside area that were already sent to you and given to us by the 108th at our meeting on Monday. Crime can happen anywhere so EVERYONE always needs to be alert. However, it is imperative that those of you who live on the Maspeth/Woodside border and in Elmhurst near Calamus/51st Avenues be especially alert to any suspicious vehicles driving around. If you are hesitant to call 911, get as much info as you can and pass it on to me. I'll give it to our precincts. The Maspeth burglaries follow the GLAs. If you see a stranger on your neighbor's property, call 911 immediately!! Maspeth 104th GLAs (car thefts)
Please pass this info along and get the word out. Call 911 if you see suspicious activity. At 5:15 pm today, one of our members called to say he saw the 110th Precinct on Calamus Avenue/Ankener Avenue. He was told a home was burglarized. This location is right on the Maspeth/Woodside/Elmhurst border so we all need to be alert. Please don't leave your windows open when you go out and since most burglaries occur at the rear or side of a residence, make sure the windows and doors have good locks. If you would like a free home security survey, call the Crime Prevention Officer at your precinct. They will make an appointment to meet with you at your convenience and you will be given inexpensive ways to safeguard your home. Crime Prevention Officers: 104th Precinct - PO Tom Barbario - 718-386-6223 108th Precinct - PO Eli Gani - 718-784-5427 110th Precinct - PO Elvis Santana - 718-476-9326 An update from the COP104 meeting last night:
Reminder: Save $$ on your theft insurance and deter car thieves by taking advantage of the VIN Etch (Vehicle Identification Number) that Comet will be co-sponsoring with the 104th and 110th Precincts at Maspeth Federal's parking lot on 69th Street/Grand Avenue on Saturday, April 30th between 1:00 and 5:00 pm.
You can also arrange for a free home security survey by the NYPD. They will give you low-cost tips that could deter a burglar. The VIN Etch will be cancelled if it rains. It doesn't matter where you live to take advantage of this program. Maspeth Federal will have a big shredding truck in case you have important documents you wish to dispose of. Council Member Elizabeth Crowley has arranged to have an E-truck on hand to collect electronics such as computers, monitors, cell phones, etc. PO Youssef returned from vacation and I was able to get the crime stats for the 108th Precinct Winfield/Woodside area that is adjacent to Maspeth and Elmhurst. The two reported burglaries sparked my attention. Rather than just taking jewelry, cash and small items that can easily be hidden in a backpack or pocket, the burglar(s) also removed large items from the residences. Since most of us live near a precinct border you need to know what is going on a few blocks from your home.
A Comet member reports that on Monday, 4/13, her neighbor awoke to find his 2011 Escalade perched on top of four boxes and all four wheels had been removed. The vehicle was parked on 53rd Avenue at 66th Street. The neighbor has replaced the tires on the Escalade and had wheel locks installed. Hopefully this incident was reported to the 104th Precinct. Hi Everyone, Last month I sent a notification to folks alerting them about an individual wanted in a series of burglaries in south west Elmhurst in the 110th Precinct near the Woodside border. Surprisingly, folks from Maspeth responded said they saw someone matching his description. One sighting was on 57th Avenue near PS 58, the others were in west Maspeth. Everyone who called asked if this individual had a beard but the 110th Precinct said surveillance tape of the person was too grainy to see it.
Update: DI Napolitano of the 110th Precinct contacted me to say it's now believed this individual DOES have a beard. In case you weren't notified previously or forgot the description, it's as follows: male black, approx 6' - 6'2, thin about 190 lbs. He was last seen wearing a black North Face jacket with work boots. He was walking with a shopping cart. If this man did burglaries in Elmhurst he certainly won't have a problem doing them elsewhere. If you see someone matching this description, CALL 911. Tell the operator that you see a male matching the description of a burglar wanted for multiple burglaries in the 110th Precinct. The responding precinct will then refer the case to the 110th Precinct Squad to determine whether or not this is the suspect they are looking for. Pass this on to others in the neighborhood and let's work to get this perpetrator off the street before there's more victims! Please keep an eye out for the following regardless of where you live in the 104th, 108th, 110th Precinct areas. These are not isolated incidents!! If you see anything suspicious, call 911 immediately. At 3:45 am this morning, Monday, 2/22, my neighbor spotted two males walking down 70th Street/53rd Avenue (104th Precinct) and heading towards Calamas Avenue which is the beginning of Woodside (108th Precinct). The two males, who were wearing hoodies, were walking in the middle of the street trying car doors - most likely looking for cash, GPS's or other valuables. My neighbor called 911. A few minutes later 911 called back saying they sent units to the area and were looking for a physical description. Unfortunately, that's the only information my neighbor could provide in the few seconds that he saw them. Since the 108th Precinct begins a couple of blocks from this location and are not on the same police frequency as the 104th, it's likely these males were in the 108th Precinct by the time the 104th responded. That's one of the problems we have living on a precinct border. Please make sure your car doors are locked and you don't leave valuables behind!!! We were told at our last Comet meeting that we are continuing to have a problem with burglaries. The burglar(s) is entering through the side or rear of homes - and occurred even with the heavy snow piled up. Crime doesn't take a holiday! Lastly, if you have expensive rims on your car or have a new car, consider putting on wheel locks. People are coming out in the morning to find their tires gone. Please pass this on to others. The more people looking out the better chance we have of catching these creeps before they escalate as the weather gets warmer.
Hi Everyone,
In addition to the arrests of Thomas Rank and Matthew Young mentioned in the above letter, the 104th has made another major graffiti arrest. *Matthew Perez* was arrested on 1/31/11 and charged 31 times - 16 arrests in the 104th Precinct, 1 in Brookyn and 14 in other Queens precincts. Keep in mind that he was arrested on graffiti that was reported by the property owner. Who knows how many buildings weren't reported! I would appreciate it if everyone take a minute to call and leave a message for *Special Prosecutor Jesse Sligh* at the District Attorney's Office at *718-286-6400* and ask that they treat this perpetrator the same as with the arrests of Matthew Young and Thomas Rank -* maximum sentence*. We need to band together to send a clear message to these vandals! Send this to all your contacts! |
