In response to complaints raised by COMET members about the graffiti in Elmhurst, we are pleased to announce that on Tuesday, July 12th at 10:00 am, Council Member Karen Koslowitz will be at 57th Avenue/85th Street to kickoff a cleanup of the railroad overpass. Her office was told this is the first extensive cleanup of the bridge in 60 years! Members of the Bethzatha Church will also be attending. We are hopeful to see other locations in Elmhurst cleaned in the near future. I am hopeful that you can attend and support Council Member Koslowitz' efforts.
Hi Everyone,
In addition to the arrests of Thomas Rank and Matthew Young mentioned in the above letter, the 104th has made another major graffiti arrest. *Matthew Perez* was arrested on 1/31/11 and charged 31 times - 16 arrests in the 104th Precinct, 1 in Brookyn and 14 in other Queens precincts. Keep in mind that he was arrested on graffiti that was reported by the property owner. Who knows how many buildings weren't reported! I would appreciate it if everyone take a minute to call and leave a message for *Special Prosecutor Jesse Sligh* at the District Attorney's Office at *718-286-6400* and ask that they treat this perpetrator the same as with the arrests of Matthew Young and Thomas Rank -* maximum sentence*. We need to band together to send a clear message to these vandals! Send this to all your contacts! On July 20, 2010, COMET went around West Maspeth taking photos of graffiti and other quality of life problems. These were reported to Council Member Elizabeth Crowley's office, which called in 311 complaints. For problems with weeds, overgrown areas, dumping and graffiti, the Department of Sanitation is notified. Home and business owners may be fined for garbage or weeds in front of or on their property. The City cleans graffiti free of charge so long as the building owner does not object. The City promises to have these issues resolved within 35 days of the complaints. We will follow up in coming days to make sure that the City has kept its word.
