Residents and business owners, We've had several robbery incidents in the area. The perpetrators are two male blacks. The victim of the latest robbery followed the perpetrators and observed them getting into a blue Civic with "FLA" as part of the license plate. They fled toward Eliot Avenue. Here are the incidents so far - a couple are repeats from my email last week but you need to see the connection.
PO Youssef, Community Affairs from the 108th Precinct provided us with our crime stats for the past 28 days. There's good and bad news. Folks who live on the Maspeth/Woodside/Elmhurst border need to be aware. I should have the stats for Maspeth and south Elmhurst by the beginning of next week. 0 murders; 0 rapes; 4 robberies; 1 felony assault (husband/wife); 1 car theft (GLA); 3 grand larcenies. One incident was a bike that was chained on Calamus Ave/72nd St and was stolen on 6/26 at noontime. Robberies
Hi Everyone,
I promised to update you if there is anything you need to be aware of in the Maspeth area. Not surprisingly, we're having a car theft problem (GLAs) on the border with the 108th Precinct. In order for you to see a clear pattern between the two communities, I'm listing the locations in Maspeth that were just given to me by the 104th and below that the GLAs in the Woodside area that were already sent to you and given to us by the 108th at our meeting on Monday. Crime can happen anywhere so EVERYONE always needs to be alert. However, it is imperative that those of you who live on the Maspeth/Woodside border and in Elmhurst near Calamus/51st Avenues be especially alert to any suspicious vehicles driving around. If you are hesitant to call 911, get as much info as you can and pass it on to me. I'll give it to our precincts. The Maspeth burglaries follow the GLAs. If you see a stranger on your neighbor's property, call 911 immediately!! Maspeth 104th GLAs (car thefts)
Please pass this info along and get the word out. Call 911 if you see suspicious activity. At 5:15 pm today, one of our members called to say he saw the 110th Precinct on Calamus Avenue/Ankener Avenue. He was told a home was burglarized. This location is right on the Maspeth/Woodside/Elmhurst border so we all need to be alert. Please don't leave your windows open when you go out and since most burglaries occur at the rear or side of a residence, make sure the windows and doors have good locks. If you would like a free home security survey, call the Crime Prevention Officer at your precinct. They will make an appointment to meet with you at your convenience and you will be given inexpensive ways to safeguard your home. Please keep an eye out for the following regardless of where you live in the 104th, 108th, 110th Precinct areas. These are not isolated incidents!! If you see anything suspicious, call 911 immediately. At 3:45 am this morning, Monday, 2/22, my neighbor spotted two males walking down 70th Street/53rd Avenue (104th Precinct) and heading towards Calamas Avenue which is the beginning of Woodside (108th Precinct). The two males, who were wearing hoodies, were walking in the middle of the street trying car doors - most likely looking for cash, GPS's or other valuables. My neighbor called 911. A few minutes later 911 called back saying they sent units to the area and were looking for a physical description. Unfortunately, that's the only information my neighbor could provide in the few seconds that he saw them. Since the 108th Precinct begins a couple of blocks from this location and are not on the same police frequency as the 104th, it's likely these males were in the 108th Precinct by the time the 104th responded. That's one of the problems we have living on a precinct border. Please make sure your car doors are locked and you don't leave valuables behind!!! We were told at our last Comet meeting that we are continuing to have a problem with burglaries. The burglar(s) is entering through the side or rear of homes - and occurred even with the heavy snow piled up. Crime doesn't take a holiday! Lastly, if you have expensive rims on your car or have a new car, consider putting on wheel locks. People are coming out in the morning to find their tires gone. Please pass this on to others. The more people looking out the better chance we have of catching these creeps before they escalate as the weather gets warmer.
The 44-year old con man, who was arrested by the 108th Precinct, had his day in court. We have been told he took a "plea" deal and the little creep only received a sentence of 60 days. Oh, don't assume he'll spend the entire 60 days in jail - knowing how the system works he'll probably be released early for "good behavior". If we find out when he's released we'll notify you. It is very upsetting to know that this individual received so little time after he conned dozens of kind-hearted residents in Maspeth, Elmhurst and other communities for money by telling them he needed it to pick up a prescription for his sick mother. Rest assured this creep will soon be back on the street pulling his scam on other unsuspecting people. Hopefully people will call 911 not if, but when he comes back to our neighborhood. We want to thank everyone for getting the word out. We especially want to thank and commend those of you who were victimized and stepped forward. COMET plans to give the officer who arrested this creep an award at our February 7th meeting. We do not meet in January.
Hi Everyone, At our meeting tonight we were not pleased to hear that we have a burglary problem in Maspeth and a smaller problem in Winfield that could easily escalate if folks do not keep an eye out. Since Elmhurst is not far, we want everyone to be on the alert. Maspeth/Winfield folks should note most of the burglaries seem to run in a line between the communities between 65th to 67th Streets. Folks who live in "the Valley" in Elmhurst should still be careful about robberies. One occurred just across Queens Boulevard on Albion Avenue at 9:00 pm and a 43-year old man was the victim. Especially those of you who live in Elmhurst, keep in mind that Holiday time is rapidly approaching and robberies in your area always seem to go up during that time. Here's the burglary statistics:
104th Precinct
Several thugs attempted to burglarize a Maspeth house just before 1 p.m. on August 6, a gutsy move when many pairs of eyes could simply look out the window and see that something was out of place. A next-door neighbor got home early from work and noticed two strangers ringing the doorbell. He went into his house, heard some noises and observed the intruders trying to force open the back door with a crowbar. He attempted to chase down the thugs, and his yells of “Get him! Get the plate!” caught the attention of a young male neighbor, who ran up to the getaway vehicle, a light blue minivan with an Illinois license plate, which was parked several hundred yards up the block at 60th Drive and Mount Olivet Crescent. “They skidded out around the corner with a screech and I knew they were already gone,” said the young man, “so I focused on the plate only, repeating the numbers over and over to myself.” It turns out several of the middle digits were incorrect, but his description helped police quickly track down the speeding vehicle, which crashed into several parked cars on the other side of the cemetery, on a residential stretch of 69th Street and Caldwell Avenue. The suspects took off on foot and a frantic pursuit followed, with helicopters searching from above. As of press time, the suspects had not been caught.
