The Adams Administration is committed to getting trash bags off the street, bringing New York City in line with other global leaders that have moved their waste into containers. Between the commercial containerization effort and sweeping new residential rules, 70% of the city’s trash is headed into containers. By moving the black bags off the streets and into sealed, rodent-proof receptacles, we are reclaiming public spaces, cutting off the 24-hour rat buffet, and improving quality of life for all New Yorkers.
Additional information about the new regulations is available at: https://www.nyc.gov/assets/dsny/site/resources/recycling-and-garbage-laws/use-bins/residential-containerization
The new containerization rules are not affected by the budget cuts.
- ALL Businesses will still be required to containerize their trash beginning March 2024
- ALL residential buildings with 1-9 units will still be required to containerize their trash beginning in the Fall of 2024.
We appreciate the challenges that the new regulations may pose to residents and businesses alike and thank you for sharing your concerns.
Sincerely,
Debra Barreto, Deputy Director
Bureau of Community Affairs
New York City Department of Sanitation
