HEALTH DEPARTMENT TO SPRAY FOR ADULT MOSQUITOES IN PARTS OF BROOKLYN AND QUEENS TO REDUCE RISK OF WEST NILE VIRUS

Trucks Will Spray Pesticide In Parts Of Brooklyn and Queens On The Nights Of September 2 and 4, 2025, Weather Permitting

NEW YORK — To reduce mosquito activity and the risk of West Nile virus, the Health Department will conduct adulticide treatments in Brooklyn and Queens.

Trucks will spray pesticides in sections of Queens beginning Tuesday, September 2, 2025, between the hours of 8:30 P.M. and 6:00 A.M. the following morning, weather permitting. In case of bad weather, application in Queens will be delayed until Wednesday, September 3, 2025, between the hours of 8:30 P.M. and 6:00 A.M. the following morning, weather permitting.

Trucks will spray pesticides in sections of Brooklyn beginning Thursday, September 4, 2025, between the hours of 8:30 P.M. and 6:00 A.M. the following morning, weather permitting. In case of bad weather, application Brooklyn will be delayed until Monday, September 8, 2025, between the hours of 8:30 P.M. and 6:00 A.M. the following morning, weather permitting.

The Health Department will use very low concentrations of Anvil®, Duet®, or MERUS® 3. The risks of pesticides applied by the Health Department for mosquito control are low to people and pets. Some people who are sensitive to spray ingredients may experience short-term eye or throat irritation, or a rash. People with respiratory conditions may also be affected.

To stay safe during spraying

  • Stay indoors, whenever possible.
  • Air conditioners can remain on. While unnecessary, you may wish to close air conditioner vents or choose the recirculate function.
After spraying

  • Wash skin and clothing exposed to pesticides with soap and water.
  • Always wash fruits and vegetables with water. The most effective way to control mosquitoes is to eliminate any standing water. New Yorkers are also encouraged to mosquito-proof their homes and take precautions when spending time outdoors.
Reducing exposure to mosquitoes

  • Use an approved insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus (not for children under 3), or products that contain the active ingredient IR3535.
  • Make sure windows have screens. Repair or replace screens that have tears or holes.
  • Eliminate any standing water from your property and dispose of containers that can collect water. Standing water is a violation of the New York City Health Code.
  • Make sure roof gutters are clean and draining properly.
  • Clean and chlorinate swimming pools, outdoor saunas and hot tubs. Keep them empty or covered if not in use. Drain water that collects in pool covers.
Report standing water by calling 311 or visiting nyc.gov/health/wnv. For more information about West Nile virus, call 311 or visit nyc.gov.

Community Alert - chain theft

8/30/2025

We had another chain stolen on Sunday, 8/24, about 4:30 pm in the vicinity of 60th Street between 56th Drive and Maspeth Avenue.. Two men got out of a car and started yelling to the victim,, "Hey, Uncle". They hugged him and then released him. After they released him the victim realized that the chain had been stolen from around his neck and replaced by a fake gold chain. Unfortunately, this incident wasn't reported to the 104th Precinct.

An attempted incident occurred on Thursday, 8/21, on Calamus Avenue in the  vicinity of 72nd Street on the 108th Precinct side of the street. It involved a woman carrying a baby. trying to sell fake gold.. The targeted victim  knew it was a scam and waved the woman away. The woman hopped into a minivan and took off with some guys. It was the second time the victim was targeted.
  • It's important to make a police report if you have been the victim of a crime. If no one reports crime the police will think nothing is going on here and will devote their attention elsewhere.
  • The police will ask neighbors for videos and perhaps be able to get a description of the perpetrator(s) and the make, model and plate number of the vehicle involved.
  • These jewelry crimes may be old news to us but many of your neighbors are unaware of it. Please pass the word!!

Gas Line Inspections

8/6/2025

Dear Community Partners,

Last week we reminded customers that we conduct routine gas safety inspections which may require entry into their premises.  Below is some information about this process to assist with supporting constituents:
  • Con Edison is required by New York State Law to perform an inspection of gas service lines.
  • To properly conduct these inspections, we may need access to the home or building. We will make multiple attempts to perform the inspection. If Con Edison or our qualified contractors are unable to perform the inspection, a technician will leave a drop card behind asking the customer to schedule an appointment.
  • We do not charge a fee for the inspection, but customers can be charged up to $500 per meter per month if we cannot complete the inspection after multiple attempts.
  • Con Edison or a qualified contractor hired by Con Edison, will perform this work. Our approved contractors are Reconn Utility Services, Storti Quality Services, and Alisto. Con Edison employees and contractors will carry a Con Edison photo ID. For your safety, if you would like to verify the status of the employee or contractor at your door, please call 1-800-75 CONED (1-800-752-6633). *National Grid customers should call 1-718-643-4050.

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers about gas line inspections, along with gas safety and additional information is available at Gas Service Line Inspections | Con Edison.

If your office has any questions, please let us know.  We would be happy to assist.

Thank you,
Rich
