For those of you who saw the commotion on Calamus Avenue this afternoon at about 3:00 pm, here's what I've learned. At approximately 3:00 pm today on Calamus Avenue/74th Street, the 108th Precinct arrested a male in a stolen vehicle. Believe it or not, they found a stolen motorcycle in the stolen vehicle! He was arrested for a double GLA (Grand Larceny Auto). The investigation is still ongoing. I'm sure we'll hear more about this i.e. where the vehicle was stolen from, etc. at our Comet meeting on 9/12.
I know everyone is probably tired of hearing about car break ins. But they are continuing to happen dispite every effort to discourage folks from leaving GPS's, loose change, etc. in their cars. Some people remove their GPS but leave the suction cups or marks from the suction cups on the windshield alerting the crook(s) that there's likely a GPS in the glove compartment.
The latest incidents occurred over the weekend in the vicinity of 56th Road/60th Street - not far from 59th Drive where the last break ins occurred. One source claims more than 20 cars were broken into this past weekend. The 104th said that at the time I called about 9 reports were filed. (It's possible that some people didn't take the time to make the report.) If you, or someone you know was a victim, you can still make a report. At this point the number of vehicles broken into isn't this issue - the issue is that crooks are wondering around our area and no one sees anything suspicious! This is not just a Maspeth problem. The 104th states that these incidents have occurred pretty much throughout the precinct - including Glendale and Ridgewood. These crooks will move around throughout the area. As they near our precinct borders we soon may find victims in Elmhurst and Winfield too. This must be a lucrative business because they keep coming back. It's likely that these crimes are occurring during early morning hours. If you should happen to get up to go to the bathroom, take a moment to look out your window. If you see something suspicious, get a description/direction the individuals are headed and call 911. Tell the operator we've had a rash of car break ins and explain why these people look suspicious. Don't be concerned if you're right or wrong - let the police sort it out. You can't get into trouble if you're mistaken. If anyone has any information about these break ins please contact the 104th. If you prefer, pass the info on to me and I'll give it in anonymously. We need to get these people off the street. Please pass this on to friends/family! 70th Street between Garfield/51st Avenue
Winfield/Woodside, Community Board 2, 108th Precinct National Grid has acquired a permit to open the street for a major gas installation. The work is scheduled to take place from 8/8 to 9/7. It does not indicate whether the work will be done during the day or night. If you use this street to get to or from Queens Boulevard or get to Maspeth/Elmhurst/Winfield, you might want to consider an alternate route. If you live or own a business along this strip it might be a good idea to take pictures of your sidewalk/curb in the event any damage occurs. If you have any questions or concerns, contact Community Board 2 at 718-533-8773. Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer covers this area. His number is 718-383-2917. If there's an emergency, call 911. Please pass this on to others in the area who might be affected and make a note of the above numbers in case you need them. |
