110 PRECINCT'S CRIME TRENDS/SCAMS

7/16/2025

Good morning everyone, I hope everyone is enjoying the summer so far. I just want to share with you some crime trends/scams that we are noticing in the 110 Precinct. Overall, our major crime is down, but there are a few things that I would like you to be on the lookout for.

  • Residential Burglaries:  During the period of 6/16/25-7/13/25 we took 11 reports of residential burglaries, of these 11, 9 of which occurred during the night hours, which is irregular for this crime. Most residential burglaries usually occur during the day, when people are not home. Out of the 11 residential burglaries, 6 perpetrators entered through a front/rear door, and 4 perpetrators gained entry through a window. In regard to your doors, it is very important to make sure all deadbolt and secondary locks are functioning properly. The strike plate of the door should not be loose and reinforced with 3-4in screws. The view finder (peep hole) on the front door should provide 180-degree view. Cameras at the front/rear of the residences should be in working order and should have enough DVR space to record whatever duration of time is necessary (ie. vacation). As for windows, security bars may be beneficial for first floor windows. For any window, you can get extra window locks at any home improvement store ranging from $8-$30 dollars and many of these locks come with a key locking mechanism. Also, if you would like a security survey done at any residence, commercial establishment, or House of Worship, let me know and I will be happy to come out and do it. You do not have to wait for a crime to occur to request a security survey if it is needed.
  • Vehicle/Moped/Motorcycle and I will add Bicycle theft. During the period of 6/16/25-7/13/25 we took 20 reports of Grand Larceny Auto (11 mopeds, 5 cars, 4 motorcycles. Sometimes the old school methods are the best. When it comes to car theft, the steering wheel locks (club) are still extremely effective in deterring auto theft, and they also have wheel locks for mopeds/motorcycles. As for the bicycles, the chains work best. When storing any of these modes of transportation it is important to utilize any garage space, fenced in area, and utilize the above-mentioned devices. The NYPD occasionally does steering wheel lock give aways throughout the city during year.
  • Apt/Room for rent scams on Facebook Market place. This involves a scammer putting a up a Facebook Market place post for an Apt/room to rent, which they have no authority to rent out such space and/or no apt/room actually exists. We took three reports for this particular scam. The important thing here is to never send a down payment/security deposit via Zelle, Venmo etc. to anyone without actually seeing the property first.

That's all I have for now. Be well, stay safe and cool in this hot weather.

Respectfully, Police Officer John Williams

Putting a lid on the loud music!

7/5/2025

Captain Hameed Armani, Commanding Officer of the 108th Precinct, sent us the update below regarding the loud music that has been negatively affecting the community. See the attached photos!!

In response to ongoing community complaints about loud music in the Maspeth area, early this morning I responded with my team and confiscated the vehicle with massive speakers responsible for the disturbances at 44th Street and 55th Avenue.

Update from Assemblyman Raga's Office - CSX

7/3/2025

(FYI - We will continue to follow up regarding this issue.)

Good afternoon!

I hope this message finds you well.

My name is Adriel Gaviria with the Office of Assemblymember Steven Raga. We recently received an email from you regarding a CSX garbage train that was parked by Calamus Circle. We reached out to CSX and they responded to us. They reported they would not have had cars parked at that location at that time. They have also informed us that they are soon beginning construction along this line. This would provide them the ability to relocate these cars away from this area to another location to await the exchange between their railroad and the New York & Atlantic Railway.

Please let us know if you have further issues with this matter and thank you so much for bringing this to our attention.

Sincerely,
Adriel Gaviria

Community Alert! Elmurst Burglary

7/1/2025

DI Wong, Commanding Officer of the 110th Precinct, passed along the following information. It's important EVERYONE keep a lookout because this can happen anywhere.Last night, June 30th, at approximately 6:15 pm at 86-xx 55th Avenue, an Asian resident  left the house for about two hours and returned home to a burglary in progress. Cash and jewelry was stolen. Entry was made through a bathroom window. The perpetrator exited through the front door.

The perpetrator was wearing an Amazon vest and was carrying an opened umbrella (probably hiding his face from cameras).

DI Wong is hoping residents will call if they notice a person with an Amazon vest, without a package, walking around.

If you see a suspicious person:
  • Call 911 and tell the operator why the person is suspicious. In this case explain the individual is wearing an Amazon vest and walking around with no package. Explain there have been past burglaries involving someone wearing an Amazon vest breaking into homes and the police want to be notified immediately if someone matches this description.
  • Try to give as much info as you can. Description (hair, clothes, height, weight, etc.)
  • If you can see the vehicle he arrived in give a description (make, model, color, etc.)
