I just want to share with you some crime trends that we are noticing in the 110 Precinct.
- We have an ongoing citywide pattern involving Jewelry Swap. This crime involves perpetrators that tend to engage in conversation with the older adults (particularly of Asian background). During this conversation, the perpetrator asks to look at the victim's expensive jewelry (necklace, watch, bracelet, etc) and they replace it with inexpensive costume jewelry and quickly flee the scene. It is very important to educate our older adults and anyone else that could be a potential victim of this crime, NOT to accept any such jewelry from a stranger and not to let these strangers look at their jewelry.
- There have been some Residential Burglaries in which the entry point is the front/rear door. It is very important to make sure all deadbolt, locks etc. are functioning properly. The strike plate of the door should not be loose and reinforced with 3-4in screws. Cameras at the front/rear of the residences should be in working order and should have enough DVR space to record whatever duration of time is necessary (ie. vacation).
Respectfully,
Police Officer John Williams
