Thank You Maspeth Federal Savings!!

4/23/2024

We want to take this opportunity to thank Maspeth Federal Savings for sponsoring last Saturday's Earth Day event.
  • The bank hired the paper shred truck to give folks the opportunity to destroy paperwork safely.
  • They invited the Pet Adoption Van and paid for the dog licenses. Eleven out of fifteen pets were adopted!
  • They purchased catalytic converter stickers for the NYPD to deter these expensive thefts.
  • The electronic recycling truck volunteered to attend.
Some folks came to get their cars VIN Etched and bikes registered but unfortunately things didn't go as planned since some officers were pulled for other events at the last minute. We're hopeful we'll have enough officers for the bank's next recycling event on September 28th. We'll send out a reminder.

Law & Order TV Film Shoot on Grand Avenue 4/22

4/19/2024

Universal Television, LLC and Wolf Films, Inc. are currently producing episodes for the newest addition to the "Law & Order" franchise entitled "Law & Order: Organized Crime".  Christopher Meloni (Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, Happy!), reprises his role as Detective Elliot Stabler, returning to the NYPD to battle organized crime.

For our upcoming episode, we will be filming at the following location within your district:

MONDAY, APRIL 22, 2024
- Mt Olivet Cemetery, 65-40 Grand Ave, Maspeth

We have obtained all necessary permits through the Mayor's Office of Film, Theater & Broadcasting, as well as any other required city agencies.  We will make every effort to make as minimal an impact on the neighborhood as possible, and we will release any parking once it is no longer needed.

I have attached a map showing our filming location and the blocks we will be holding for parking.

Thank you for your cooperation and we look forward to filming in your neighborhood!

Sincerely,

Crista Barrasso | Location Coordinator

The 110th Precinct has heard your concerns and is taking action. Today a truckload of scooters that had been confiscated were picked up and dropped off at the "graveyard" to be destroyed. Det. Saponieri, 110th Precinct Community Affairs, wanted to share these photos with you.

Great Job!!

Be on the lookout! The Lanternflies will be back

4/17/2024

Just a reminder to keep an eye out for these destructive Lanternflies. They are known to kill trees, shrubs and crops.

They are not known to bite humans and can be killed by stepping on them or swatting them but they are fast.
Rather than using toxic chemicals, Lanternfly bugs can be easily killed using a mixture of dish soap. Dawn dish soap is effective at controlling these bugs though any brand of dish soap works. Though it is not a completely natural method to get rid of lanternflies, it is much safer for children, pets and even adults. A lot of people prefer using Dawn dish soap to kill lanternflies as it kills them on contact'.

Sticky Substance on Mailbox

4/17/2024

We received this email below from an alert Maspeth resident. Please folks, if you're going to mail a letter in a mailbox please check to make sure there's no sticky substance on it.

"I called Postal Inspector re sticky substance on mailbox 72 ST & 53 RD, was told they'd contact my local PO.

2 days later I got a call from Maspeth PO thanking me, & saying as it was Saturday they'd have maintenance clean it Monday.

This AM, Tuesday, when I got to the box, the slot had been cleaned."

Someone responded with these helpful tips:

1) Never mail a check or anything with sensitive information through one of those blue mail boxes.
2) Go inside the post office to mail anything sensitive or send it overnight through UPS or FedEx.
3) Pay as many bills directly through your bank or set up an ach through your biller's system.  I find Autopay is the safest way to pay Con Ed, National Grid, etc. and I don't have to worry about being late.
4) If you must write checks, get a pen that makes it difficult to "scrub". Most banks will supply you with one.
5) Get direct deposit for all incoming checks.
6) Use systems like Zelle for small payments but make sure you know the person you are "Zelling". Never respond to a stranger claiming to be a vendor demanding a Zelle payment or your routing number and account numbers or gift cards.
7) No, your grandson is not stuck in France with no money or credit card.

Be careful, the scanners are smart. Evil, but smart.
