Maspeth graffiti vandal arrested

3/11/2014

On Saturday, March 8, 2014 David Negron, 20 of Middle Village, Queens was arrested and charged with 21 individual acts of making graffiti.

Negron vandalized everything from the store fronts of local businesses, ATM machines, mailboxes, doors, walls emergency call boxes and payphones. This damage was done mostly in the Maspeth and Ridgewood areas of the Precinct. I am purposefully not including his 'tag' as to not give him any publicity.

Community alert - burglary in Winfield!

3/11/2014

Hi All,

Captain Hennessy, 108th Precinct, wants to alert us to the fact that there was a burglary yesterday, Monday 3/10, in Winfield, 50 #s on 65th Place. It was a rear door entry. It too place between 10:30 am and 4:20 pm. Unknown perpetrators removed US currency and jewelry.

This is a stone's throw from where the burglaries were occurring in Maspeth. It's just down the road from Elmhurst. Keep your eyes open and call 911 if you see anything suspicious!

Yet another burglary

3/3/2014

Hi All,

Captain Manson, 104th Precinct, just called to confirm that there was a burglary at 70 #s on 52nd Avenue as I reported to you yesterday. For some reason it wasn't reported until today, 3/3.

Now for more bad news:

This afternoon, at approximately 2:30 pm, a female Asian resident who lives on first floor in a two-family house at 72 #s on Calamus Avenue heard loud noises.  At first she thought it was the person who lives upstairs, but decided to open the door and look anyway. When she opened her door she saw a dark-skinned male Asian walking down the stairs. She asked him what his was doing. He just walked past her and out the door.

Still curious, she looked out her window and saw him walk up the block. A minute later he returned and got into a yellow cab (we believe as a passenger) and drove away.

She then realized that HER door was tampered with! When she went to the upstairs apartment it was ransacked!!

At this point, the 104th is still looking into all this activity and it isn't known whether or not this individual is involved in one or more incidents in our area.

Please don't let your guard down for a minute and call 911 for anything suspicious.

I'm sure we'll hear more at tonight's meeting - the report is still being typed up. Captain Manson said he will introduce Captain Brown, the new Executive Officer who replaced Captain Travaglia.

Be safe!!

Community alert - another burglary!

3/2/2014

Hi All,

Just found out from a Comet member (very reliable source) that another burglary occurred at 70 #s on 52nd Avenue overnight/early morning hours today while the family was sleeping!!

Entry was made through rear door, TV, electronics, jewelry taken. Perpetrators only stayed on first floor. Crime was reported to 104th today when family woke up and found items missing.

I reached out to Captain Manson, 104th Precinct. He has not yet seen the report so we don't know if rear door was broken into or if it was left unlocked. At this point, this burglary is unconfirmed.  If and when I hear more, I'll let everyone know.

Folks, this is VERY serious! When perpetrators go into a home when they know there's a good chance the family is there - they are not afraid to confront them. Please remain vigilant and if you hear a noise downstairs, DO NOT investigate - call 911 immediately. Tell the operator we've had some night burglaries and you fear someone is entering your home. You will NOT get in trouble if it turns out to be nothing.  Better safe than sorry!! All of our precincts are aware of what's going on.

If these burglars took a TV and electronics, they must have a vehicle. That means they can hit a home anywhere. Regardless of where you live, please take this seriously and pass this along to others!!

Btw, we're still up in the air about our meeting tomorrow. Will let you know decision.

Community alert - burglaries!

3/2/2014

Hi All,

Captain Manson, 104th Precinct, reached out to let us know that we had two more burglaries in our area. One of them could have turned out worse because victim was home!!

  • 52 #s on 74th Street - victims were gone from 13th to 25th and returned to find front door damaged, jewelry and tax information stolen. Crime wasn't reported until yesterday.
  • 67th/52nd Avenue - 6:30 pm yesterday, 2/28. 18-year old male home watching TV, someone rang doorbell. When he looked out he saw a male black about 6' tall with black hoodie, black pants, looking down so his face couldn't be seen. He heard a noise from the rear of his home, he ran into his parents' bedroom and locked door. He heard two distinct sets of footsteps and at one point heard someone pulling the doorknob of his parents' bedroom. Nothing was stolen. Perhaps they got scared off when they realized someone was home. Luckily this didn't turn into a home invasion!! What's really disconcerting is that this occurred during a time that people are likely at home.
If you recall, we had two burglaries in Elmhurst on the Maspeth/Winfield border and burglars entered through the front door. The 110th Precinct believes these are part of a pattern that spilled over from the north side of Queens Boulevard. We cannot make the assumption that the burglaries in Maspeth are in any way connected until the NYPD investigates. However, we all need to be vigilant and call 911 if something suspicious catches your eye. Please pass on to others in the neighborhood.

At this point not sure if we will have our monthly meeting on Monday. I'll hold off to make the decision. If more than two inches of snow, meeting will be canceled.
