DSNY Update

1/30/2025

Our Vice President Toni Guillen reached out to Sanitation's Queens West 5 and asked whether or not recycling still has to be put at the curb at 8:00 pm or can we place it out at 6:00 pm with our trash.

The good news is that the recycling can go out at 6:00 pm, but DSNY wants to remind folks that cardboard boxes must be placed in a plastic bag or tied flat.

Toni said she saw DSNY Queens West 2 writing summonses the other day and we don't want folks getting a summons if it can be avoided.

COMET Meeting This Monday, 2/3, 7:00 pm

1/30/2025

We have a lot to catch up on this month. Below are some of the questions and issues that will be raised. The Zoom info is below.

NYPD Questions/Concerns
  • Crime stats and any unusual events
  • 110th Precinct - 51st Avenue/QB , Car fire - folks are asking if the motorist escaped.
  • 104th/108th Precincts - Accidents seem to top the list especially in the 104th. When officers respond, do they determine what happened and reach out to DOT with a suggestion that might avoid future accidents there?
  • 104th - Folks are asking if the perpetrator who robbed the female senior citizen near Frontera Park was apprehended.
  • Maspeth Federal's recycling event is scheduled for 4/12. Paper shredding and electronics recycling will be available. We'll reach out to the NYPD to find out if there's any programs available. There may be limited VIN Etch stickers and catalytic converter stickers available.
  • Any updates on: BQE flooding at QB, accidents on exits 18 and 19, Inter-Borough Express (IBX).
  • CSX tracks on Calamus Avenue - update, if any, regarding the noise and rat problem emanating from State property. Any suggestion from DSNY to deter illegal dumping under the overpass?
  • Update, if any, regarding the Botanical Garden project on 85th Street between 55th and 57th Avenues.

IMPORTANT - Interborough Express Zoom Meeting

1/4/2025

Many folks have voiced their concern about the Interborough Express proposal. The plan would be to connect Brooklyn though our community and into Jackson Heights.

The rail would run down 69th Street through Middle Village, Maspeth and Woodside. One of the stops proposed would be in the vicinity of 74th Street and Grand Avenue. In order move forward numerous properties near the line would be confiscated.

Do we need more trains running through our neighborhood? Do we need more congestion on Grand Avenue? Residents believe we already have bus service to Brooklyn and the subway to Brooklyn is easy to access.

Many believe the billions of dollars being set aside for this project should be used to upgrade subway service throughout NYC and not spend the money on a project we didn't ask for or need.

This is your opportunity to comment!!

Dear IBX Community Council members,

We hope you had a happy holiday season!

Our next IBX Community Council meeting will take place Thursday, Jan 16th from 4:00pm-5:30pm on Zoom. Please RSVP by responding to this message by 1/13/2025. A Zoom link will be sent to confirmed attendees.

It's been a few months since our last meeting, so here's a recap of what's been happening:

The team conducted a series of pop-up outreach events at various locations along the proposed Interborough Express route. Many of these locations were selected based on feedback from the IBX Community Council. The outreach team had over 1,300 interactions with community members and local businesses, and were able to gather feedback and learn about what the IBX would mean for their communities.

We'd like to share project updates and upcoming community engagement plans with you at our next meeting.  As always, we will also provide time for questions and discussion.

Please RSVP by responding to this message by 1/13/2025.
A Zoom link will be sent to confirmed attendees. We ask that invited organizations/offices send up to two attendees each and keep representatives consistent across Community Council meetings whenever possible.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

Thank you,

IBX Project Team
